Firefox is raping my memory

I realize that just about everyone and their brother in the tech work is all infatuated with Firefox but why this browser gets such a walk when it comes to memory problems is beyond me. I had originally switched to Chrome when it came out because I wasn’t happy with the beta of IE8 (still not) and I never really liked Firefox but recently I decided to give the new beta of Firefox another try.

Even though initially it used more memory than Chrome I continued using through several beta updates even though I did experience problems with it. That was until yesterday though when I finally had enough of the browser deciding that my memory (2Gig) was a three course meal. Within a few seconds of starting up Firefox after rebooting my system this is what Task Manager informed me that Firefox (with 3 tabs loading and no plugins installed) was using this amount of memory

Firefox memory seconds after starting up

After waiting a little bit longer to see if the remaining two tabs would finally load this is what Task Manager informed me Firefox’s memory usage was

Sorry but that just isn’t acceptable.

From the Pipeline – 6.17.08

Did you hear the news? Some new version of a browser was released today and got everyone so hot and bothered that the download site was out of commission for a short period of time. Other than that is seem to be a rather quiet day but I did manage to scrape a few things of interest from the FriendFeed pipeline today.

The incredible power of being able to think and act big :: Alexander van Elsas – why have just a single destination when instead you can have the whole airport, train station and bus station.

Extreme Ironing, A Sport Featuring Dangerous Ways To Iron Clothes :: Laughing Squid – sorry but I just couldn’t resist this one.

11 Search Trends That May Disrupt Google :: ReadWriteWeb – is this similar to the idea of death by a thousand cuts?

The cake is a lie: IE team bakes a treat for Mozilla :: Ars Technica – trust Ars to take a slap shot at Microsoft – and it didn’t come sugar coated like the cake the IE team sent to Mozilla.

6 Alternatives To Flickr Now Yahoo Is In Full Control :: The Inquisitr – Duncan comes to the rescue of folks worried about what is going to happen now that it is totally in the hands of Yahoo as the Flickr founders head for the nearest exit.

From the Pipeline – 5.6.08

Even though today started out on the wrong side of the bed – so to speak – it’s turned out to be a pretty good day all round. To finish of this day here’s a few things I found interesting in my FriendFeed pipeline.

The Coolest Business Plan Ever :: The Post Money Value – I think the post title is more tongue in cheek considering the example Rick gave in the post. Definitely made me chuckle a bit when I read it.

Scoble advertising in Twitter? :: broadstuff – Robert Scoble is known for taking flack for a lot of stuff which is what Alan has done in his post about advertising showing up on Robert’s blog and more interestingly in his Twitter stream.

Mozilla warns of Flash and Silverlight ‘agenda’ :: ZDNet – a bit of an attack against Flash and Silverlight by Tristan Nitot of Mozilla – like Mozilla wouldn’t have an agenda of it’s own either .. ya … right.

Opera Releases Firebug Alternative: Dragonfly :: TechCrunch – not to be left behind Opera readies its answer to the Firebug plugin for Firefox. Of course this will only really matter if you are a web developer.

Sneaker Freaker Magazine – Global sneaker news, info & exclusive updates – everything sneakers – this is just plain fun especially if you are into hot news about running shoes and the companies that make them.

Browser Roundup [11.25.06]

Okay okay .. I’m running a little late today getting this posted but I’ve had my head stuck in a SUSE 10.1 install doing some learning and then to top it off the install borked my access to Vista via GRUB. It also doesn’t help that this is a turkey day weekend in the U.S so news of any sort has been pretty slim.

The big news this week in the browser world was a bug hitting Firefox.

Firefox 2.0 Password Manager Bug Exposes Passwordsslashdot (/.)

Today, Mozilla made public bug #360493, which exposes Firefox’s Password Manager on many public sites. The flaw derives from Firefox’s willingness to supply the username and password stored on one page on a domain to another page on a domain. For example, username/password input tags on a MySpace user’s site will be unhelpfully propagated with the visitor’s MySpace.com credentials.

Firefox 2 Aims to Steal IE Corporate DevelopersRedmond Developer News

The Mozilla Foundation released the final version of Firefox 2 on Oct. 24. While the primary aim of the open source browser is to lure end users, another goal is to prompt corporate development managers to switch allegiances.

Officials from Mozilla believe the combination of the new Firefox and IE 7 radically changes the browser market. The most critical issue could be Microsoft’s de-emphasis of ActiveX, a powerful technology that hackers love to attack, Mozilla officials argued in a recent interview.

Browser Saturday [11.18.06]

It seems now that the new release dust has settled we have returned to the oneupmanship and how to grab more marketshare in the browser world.

THE PC GUY: Mozilla Firefox - NorthJersey.com

But there has been so much buzz around Firefox for so long — an estimated 70 million users call Firefox their premier browser — that I revisited this program that I last examined a year earlier, and gave it another spin early this summer.

I haven’t stopped using it since.

Here’s why you may want to do the same.

Mozilla Firefox is a powerful browser that can undertake tasks while using only minimal amounts of RAM. It’s fast and efficient. You click a button, it responds instantly. In a field defined by milliseconds, Firefox is a speed demon.

The Secret of Firefox’s SuccessTechNewsWorld

Firefox Web browser co-creator Blake Ross said terminology is just one of the challenges for the future success of the free, open-sourced software. With the recent release of Firefox 2, the Key Biscayne, Fla., resident and 21-year-old Stanford University student sat down to talk about the future of the only Web browser that comes close to competing with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and how it’s shaping the future of the Internet.

Report: Firefox 2.0 Trumps IE7 In Phish-FightingWashington Post

The newly released Mozilla Firefox 2.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Web browsers both include new technology to help flag and block phishing sites — those authentic-looking Web sites set up by scammers to trick users into entering personal financial information.

So how do the browsers stack up against one another in a no-holds-barred, anti-phishing slugfest? One third-party test that pitted the browsers against two week’s worth of phishing sites concluded that Firefox’s phish net may have fewer holes than IE’s.
