Blocking in the social media world – Be brave, just do it.

Lamprey-on-hand-web There seems to be some sort of connotation in the social media world that by blocking people you are doing some sort of faux pas and you should automatically go and take a shower after clicking that button.

I have been thinking about this for awhile now and have come to a simple conclusion – fuck ‘em if they can’t take a joke.

Seriously.

Sure it’s all very nice to have all those high follower numbers and really what does it matter if some of them are spammers, bots, and other such polluters. After all it’s not like you are going to follow them back or going to have coffee with them at the next Twitter conference.

Except for one thing – once they follow you your Twitter messages show up in their timeline and as a result your message (or your brand) is tainted by that association.

If there is one thing that is important in the social media world it is the reputation you build around yourself. When you allow these leeches to stick to you like a lamprey your reputation finds one more little black mark being added to it.

The answer to this, and building a better reputation is to cut them off at the knees. Don’t let them get attached and pollute your hard earned reputation. We’re given the tools to use it so don’t be shy about using them – Block ‘em. Period.

There’s no need to feel guilty.

Added Note: interestingly enough I posted this at around the same time that Twitter let everyone know that they had just added the option to flag a Twitter account as spam
