A better Disqus integration with FriendFeed

by Steven Hodson on January 7, 2009 · Comments

FF2Disqus I am an avid user of FriendFeed and I use Disqus here on WinExtra Shooting at Bubbles and on an off I would use FriendFeed’s import feature to add comments made on any posts into my FriendFeed stream. The only thing was that the implementation irritated the shit out of me. It wasn’t anything that Disqus was doing or the FriendFeed was doing but when I used that option I always had the feeling that the imported comments were out of place.

After all the original post that the imported comments were made on showed up as individual items and one would think that The imported comments would show up under those items – but they don’t. Sure it’s not a big thing but the separation of the two bothered me. Then today along comes a post on the Disqus blog about a new 3rd party tool that would let me fix the problem.

Apparently a Disqus community member by the name of Carter Rabasa has gotten a littler creative and developed a web app called FF2Disqus. With this handy little app you can now sync Disqus with FriendFeed, FriendFeed with Disqus or both ways. Since I already use the excellent FriendFeed plugin for Wordpress by Glenn Slaven I wasn’t worried about syncing FriendFeed with my Disqus comments

The idea of finally being able to have comments show up in FriendFeed as I thought they should was right up my alley. To be honest though; and the procrastinator that I can be, I just flagged the announcement post away for later consideration and got on with work and it wasn’t until I read Louis Gray’s post about implementing on his blog that I got around to setting it up.

I will say it was a pretty painless process even though I have yet to see how it will work out. The only thing that I’m not sure about is the one an hour syncing. I’m sure there is a reason for it but still .. an hour? Anyway it’s all setup so we’ll see how it goes.

  • So are you a monosyncratic or a polysyncratic?
  • oh sure confuse me with big words that the dictionary can't help me with :)
  • I meant do you sync one way or two way?
  • One way or two way? That sounds like a rather personal question. :)

I've actually held off on implementing this. I know that it can be turned off if I don't like it, but I'm not sure that there's a real benefit in unifying the conversations on the Disqus and the FriendFeed platforms, other than the fact that it will boost your Disqus comment count. How does spam moderation work, for example? Louis and Steven, I'll be following both of you to see your experiences with this. (In case anyone's keeping track, I entered this comment in Disqus.)
  • I'm more interested in getting the comments made here in the proper place on FriendFeed.
  • From Disqus to FriendFeed .. I already have the other way covered with Glenn Slaven's plugin
  • I guess I found the article a bit confusing, because you state that you didn't need it due to having a different plugin installed.. then.. you did install it?

Well, if this comment shows up in FriendFeed on your side, I can safely assume you did!
  • sorry if I confused the issue Phil .. I already have the FriendFeed coming back to the blog post using a different plugin. What this solved - if it works - was having the comments made here show up in FriendFeed under the post item.
  • Perfectly all right, Steven. I figured it out after reading Louis' related
entry and sitting in the dark, thinking for a while. Anyway, it sounds very
cool! I think tomorrow I may try it out myself.

That’s some interesting points you have raised. I wonder if it usually happens as you have said. Anyway I learnt something new all the same.
