Not really. It’s long since set in stone that typing in all caps is akin to shouting at someone.
When you see a netizen typing along in allcaps, you assume they are:
- A fool.
- Angry or fervent.
- A hopeless, uneducated, borderline illiterate noob.
I find the latter to be the most commonly encountered.
I also find the capslock key itself to be superfluous and irritating. The only time I’ve used it (intentionally) is when I was editing scripts for a COD4 server I admin at, and the files were all done in capitals, so I followed suit just to keep the files looking clean. In 20+ years of using computers…that’s it.
Now, I don’t type so good. I’m not a hunt-and-peck guy, I can buzz along pretty good, but I can’t look away from the keyboard for long, so when I bump that capslock, I can type a whole string of text in caps before I realize I’ve done it. I’d like to rip it off. Or, in the words of the creator of CapsLockBeGone:
For too long was I tormented by the terrors of the CapsLock key. Something had to be done. Too many people were suffering. Too many were in anguish. Finally, I had had enough and decided to take matters into my own hands. And thus, CapsLockBeGone was born.
This isn’t a Killer App by any means, but I talked to several folks about this afternoon and there was enough interest that I felt it needed sharing.
Less than one meg on the download and a quick install. Creative Commons license, all free, no registration or fuss.
As stated in the installer, it’s pretty self-explanatory. Shut off the key, turn it into a shift key, or turn it back on. Beware, the program gets a little snide. The release log says that the current version added the ability to change the capslock to a CONTROL key, but the screenshot above, taken on my XP Pro box, does not depict this feature. Version 1.0 is what you get when clicking the download link, version 1.1 is supposedly the latest version.
You can do all this manually, as seen here, but why do it the hard way when you don’t need to eh? That link may also be useful if you disable the key, then uninstall CapsLockBeGone and can’t find it again.
I trust I’ll see far less allcaps typing in the future? Tell all your noob friends, eh?
