e-Stewards to accredit electronic recyclers

by Steven Hodson on November 12, 2008 · Comments

Every great advance in our society also comes with a negative side to it. For the great advances we have made with technology as far as the computers; and its peripherals, we have yet to serious address the junk we leave behind as we travel down the information highway.

As we constantly upgrade our hardware to the newest models as they come out we are leaving a real mess behind as our old hardware is becoming a real problem known as e-waste.

To help deal with the sometimes toxic mess that is left behind a total of 34 electronic recyclers in the U.S. and Canada have gotten together and created the e-Stewards program. the idea behind the program is to help reduce the occurrence of illegal and harmful e-waste practices:

forbid the dumping of toxic e-waste in developing countries, local landfills and incinerators; the use of prison labor to process e-waste; and the unauthorized release of private data contained in discarded computers.

By being one of the first programs to be fully accredited and certified the e-Steward program will be able to give a gold star rating to electronics recyclers. The plan is to provide the consumers with a good visible way to know if the recycler they are using practices safe recycling and not dumping to 3rd world or substandard companies like the ones profiled in a recent 60 Minutes show about e-waste. You can catch a video about the program and you also find out locations of e-Steward approved recyclers.
