Just to save my American readers any undo need for reading this I am writing about the total stupidity of a situation happening within the Canadian telecom and internet service providers – which for most cases are one and the same – so you may not find it overly interesting – unless of course you need a good laugh. If so keep reading because this situation has to be the height of idiocy.
According to Michael Geist [nw]; who happens to be one of Canada’s leading experts on the law and telecommunication, it would appear that our country’ leading telecommunication and cable companies have banded together and form a group called Canadian ISP Alliance. So far so good but let’s take a look who’s in this group. We have:
- Bell
- Rogers (both phone and cable)
- Cogeco
- Quebecor
- Telus
- MTS Allstream
- Shaw
- Sasktel
- Eastlink
- Bell Aliant
So what is it these find upstanding corporations have joined forces – along with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce – to fight against?
Well it seems that they might be a little bit ticked at the fact that the Canadian Radio & Telecommunication Commission wants to but a new levy on all ISPs in Canada. Now of course all these find upstanding corporations don’t like the idea of any new levies and are bringing up the specter of network neutrality to fight against it.
Remember now these are the same companies that have consistently charged exorbitant rates for their services regardless of whether it was wireless (Rogers and the iPhone), cable or DSL (Bell caught traffic shaping and telling everyone to mind their own business). So on one hand they are fighting against a government levy against them using the unspoken argument of network neutrality and then on the other hand they want to be able to bleed us dry and give us less services for more money. Not to mention that his is all happening during a time when bandwidth usage is bound to climb because of the increased demand for video and music across multiple platform.
This is definitely a case of having your cake and eating it with the consumer getting screwed in the process.
Hey, like this post? Why not share it with a buddy?
