MyColors From Stardock

Stardock Design First off I need to add this bit of a disclaimer. I have been a WindowBlinds user for many years and it has been a part of my default install of any Windows OS since I first started using it. For the last two years I have also been a subscriber to their Object Desktop suite – of which WindowBlinds is a part – of enhancements for Windows. this year though my subscription ran out and I was unable to afford the renewal. However after my initial look at their new digital distribution platform called Impulse the folks were good enough to extend my subscription an additional year which is how I have been able to take a look at this new product – MyColors – from the company and I thank them for that.

One of the great things with WindowBlinds was the ability to skin; or theme, you desktop in just about anyway you want due to the incredibly large community that built up around the product. the only problem was that in many cases this didn’t include things like your desktop wallpaper or any of the widgets that you might be running. Some designers did include options for skinning those as well but it wasn’t a common thing. this meant that if you wanted a common look right across your desktop you had to do some hunting for matching themes and wallpapers.

With MyColors however this has changed as you can now select a complete theme package and apply it to your system with a simple one click action. The big difference is that while the WindowBlinds themes were made by community members and made freely available MyColors has become more a marketplace where the best themes available can be purchased thereby providing these creators with a way to finally make some money for all their hard work. there are some free ones available as well but the majority of the themes are available for anywhere from $9.95 up to the $20.00 range – but the quality alone makes it well worth the price.

When you install and start up MyColors for the first time you have one free theme package available besides the regular Vista Aero theme

The third theme you can see in the list is on of the other current free themes that I downloaded from the MyColors site. The fun part though comes when you decide to go do some shopping for new themes by clicking on the More Themes button and switch to the easy to use viewer of the additional theme packages available. This won shows the section called Rides and is devoted to car buffs

And then for the sports fans there are actually three sections available – NHL, NBA and of course the Collegiate Teams section

MyColors Sports

The beauty of the MyColors program is that everything is basically a simple one click operation – whether it be selecting the theme package to apply to your system or viewing all the ones that are available via their theme store. Plus if there isn’t enough there there to attract your attention you can always click on the View More button which will take you to the MyColors site where you can check out even more choices.

As much of a fan as I am of WindowBlinds I have to admit that MyColors has made a compelling case for replacing it as my default method of changing my themes. Even though this is more of a paying propositions that the WindowBlinds alternative with its extensive community of free themes I like the idea of paying for a more complete theme package of extremely high quality work.

This option won’t be for everyone but if you like the idea of being able to reward some excellent graphic artists for their work and the ease of being able to modify your desktop theme then this could be an alternative worth looking into.

Getting ready to say good-bye to Object Desktop

Object Desktop For those of you not familar with Object Desktop from Stardock it is their package of all their different utility programs like WindowBlinds and Iconpackager which are among the tools available allowing you to individualize your desktop. I have been a happy user of WindowBlinds for a long time and I upgraded to Stardock’s Object Desktop because of all the other utilities that came as part of the package.

Whether it be from things like WindowBlinds to DesktopX to their skinning editor Stardock provided excellent tools that could let anyone personalize their desktop to something plain and simple to something you might see in a horror movie slash sci-fi flick. Along with that there is also the thriving community at WinCustomize where you can find themes, cursors, icons and wallpapers to satisfy just about anyone’s needs.

As with all really good things though Object Desktop comes at a hard dollar price of $69.00 which considering all the programs that are a part of the package it is a hellva deal. Of course they have the renewal price which again is more than fair but unfortunately for me even that is now out of my range so the time is coming very shortly where I will have to say good-bye to an excellent product.

Before that happens though I may just grab a copy of DesktopX and see if I can really personalize my desktop into something cool and functional. Now don’t get me wrong I’ll still be able to use the products I already have but I will miss out on all the good stuff that I think Stardock is working towards.

I feel this because between the WindowBlinds engine becoming a root level service on Vista and Deskscapes becoming the main engine behind Vista’s animated desktop the future for further integration of Stardock handling future Windows desktops is a real possibility. I say this because of what I see happening to the Windows move to modularizing of the operating system and Stardock is perfectly positioned to be able to offer a feature rich desktop module if that time comes about.

In the meantime though if you are looking for a way to enrich and individualize your desktop I can’t suggest a better way that with the Stardock products.

Off The Cuff: Throwing Stones

I would have had this up earlier but new hardware (headset and mike) are giving me nothing but grief. In the meantime though it’s fun when people start throwing stones at Microsoft .. what’s that saying about glass houses?

Win a copy of Stardock WindowBlinds 6

Stardock I have been a long time user of WindowBlinds for just about every flavor of the Windows OS and have watched as the program has gotten better and better.

For those of you not familiar with WindowBlinds it is a program that allows you to apply pre-made themes (skinz) to your existing installation of Windows. With the thousands upon thousands of available themes that are downloadable from places like WinCustomize your options to individualize your desktop is pretty well endless.

With the official release yesterday of the newest version of WindowBlinds the experience has only gotten better and I can tell you from experience that because of Stardock’s close work with the Vista teams the resource usage of WindowBlinds is the lowest I have ever seen for the program.

As part of their release the folks at Stardock have been gracious enough to provide this fan of their software with a free WindowBlinds 6.0 licence to give away in a contest here at WinExtra. The contest is open to all comers and the rules are very simple.

In order to have a chance at winning this free licence I am looking for 2 things:

  1. Why you think you deserve the free licence
  2. and why you think Windows needs a program like WindowBlinds

A couple of caveats will also apply to all submissions:

  1. No Microsoft bashing allowed – unless exceptionally humorous
  2. No OS flaming i.e.: Mac/Linux is better so why bother with Windows

You can enter the contest in either of two ways.

  1. using the comments of this post
  2. posting on your own blog about the contest and containing your entry – while not required a link back to this post announcing the contest would be greatly appreciated.

The contest will run until October 15th, 2007 at which point the winner will be selected. The winning entry will then need to supply me with a valid email address that will be forwarded to Stardock so they can setup your account to pick up your prize.

A final note – humor will be the big deciding factor :)

Vista goodness from Stardock

I am a longtime user of WindowBlinds; the Windows Theme Manager from Stardock, even to the point that I purchased their Object Desktop package which includes WindowBlinds. So imagine my dismay when I had installed Vista and gotten over the first blush of the Areo Glass effect and wanted to return to my WB themes only to find it wouldn’t run on Vista.

In a way I expected this to happen since WB is so closely linked with the Windows subsystem; but knowing Stardock usually tries to be at the forefront of anything to do with Windows customization I expected an imminent beta release since Vista was so close to RTM.

So imagine my pleasure yesterday when I checked into their site and found that they had released such a beta; although it is only available to Object Desktop owners currently; and as fast as you can say download I was installing my copy of Object Desktop and grabbing a copy of WB for myself.

I must say that for a beta release it is doing pretty good and I have only noticed one thing that may be indicative of either the beta status or the fact that the available themes have to be redone. Sometimes; and it does seem to be application dependent, you will get a ghost of the title bar above the application window.

There is one thing that I really wish they would expand on in WB and that is their Wallpaper support of multi monitor setups. I can see that in the WB manager application they can tell how many monitors are being used so it should really be short work to allow us to select separate wallpapers for each of the monitors. This would sure help reduce the auxiliary apps running like UltraMonitor – especially if you are using it primarily for wallpaper support.

All in all though I’m a happy camper – thanks Stardock
