Braindead TechCast EP25: SXSW: Bring on the sponsorships never mind the sharing & learning

At some point, somewhere in the world, at any time there is probably some sort of tech conference going on and they seem to be growing in numbers worse that fleas on a dog. This week of course is the big spring break of tech conferences happening in Austin, Texas, called SXSWi.

Each year of the conference the number of people going has been climbing to the point they have seen a 40% increase of people attending this year over last year. That is a crap load of people no matter how you slice or dice it but it seems that just as the numbers are growing so is the undercurrent of feelings that being there is approaching pointless.

@anywhere has got me curious and you should be too

Just as the SXSW conference in Austin a few years saw the launch of a service that has had an incredible impact on our Web we could see a repeat again this year with Twitter’s announcement of its new @anywhere platform.

Curiously just as we barely had an idea of what Twitter was then or how it would bring about a fundamental change in how we communicate on the web next to nothing is known about @anywhere.

Even though there is a post about the new platform on the Twitter blog it really says very little so we are best to go by what Frederic Lardinois writes over at ReadWriteWeb to try and understand what it is about:

The new platform, for example, will allow users to identify and follow Twitter users on third-party sites without leaving the third-party site. Some of the sites that will soon use this new service include Amazon, Yahoo, Digg, Bing and the New York Times. This, according to Evan, will allow publishers to make sure that their audience is aware of their Twitter feeds, and allow users to follow a site’s or columnist’s feed without every having to leave the site. According to Williams, this will allow publishers to find more followers, and it will also allow Twitter to bring in more users to the site as well as make more non-Twitter users aware of the service.

Even with that bit of information it is still really hard to read the tea leaves as to what Twitter has up its sleeve when it comes to @anywhere.

Yet, for some reason, which I really can’t put words to, I have a gut feeling we are looking at yet another game changer. I have absolutely no direct knowledge of what @anywhere is about or how it will work but I just can’t shake the feeling that there is something really big going on here.

Everyone might be carrying on about all this location crap and some imaginary war that is going on but I have a feeling that what Twitter announced today will have a far greater impact that any silly location game cum advertisers wet dream.

The lure of conferences

If there is one thing that technology and especially Web 2.0 is well known for it is the over abundance of conferences that one could attend at any point in the year. I’ve poked fun at them in the past and not so much because of the conferences themselves but the sheer number of them. After all it seems in many cases you could spend more time going to these conferences than you could spend doing any actual work.

But no matter how much I might poke fun at the whole scene I also realize after reading posts by my good friends Louis Gray and Mark ”Rizzn” Hopkins; both of whom are attending this years SxSW, that being able to attend even one conference like SxSW a year would be really cool. Not so much for what you can pick up from all the various panels and meetings but more for the very simple fact that you could finally meet face to face those folks you have called friends for years online.

Regardless of all the other mediums we use to communicate with one another nothing beats being able to shake a friend’s hand and say hello. For me that would be the greatest pleasure.

The only good reason to be at SXSW

moby at SXSW There are more conferences, un-conferences, meet-up or any number of different gatherings that seem to get larger every year. While my chances of ever A) wanting to attend any of them or B) being able to afford to go or C) even being invited in the first place is pretty slim I gotta admit this year’s SXSW conference (party) would have been a real joy for me.

It’s not that I really could of cared less who was presenting or who was screwing up some stupid ass keynote interview. No the real reason I would have love to gone is only because of one person who was slated to be there.

It turns out that Moby was booked into Austin for several gigs:

TUESDAY 3/11
SXSW FILM CLOSING/MUSIC OPENING EVENT
Sponsored by Paste Magazine and OurStage
Stubb’s Outdoor Amphitheater
Featuring: Moby (DJ set), London-based DJ duo Addictive TV, Kaki King, Sydney Wayser
Set Time: 8:45 PM

THURSDAY 3/13
THE GIBSON ROOM
SXSW DEBUT: LITTLE DEATH NYC Sponsored by Gibson Guitars
Maggie Mae’s / 323 E. 6th Street
Set Time 4:15 PM

LOU REED TRIBUTE
204 E. 4th Street
Moby performs 2 Lou Reed songs w/ friends from Little Death NYC
Set Time: 5:15 PM

FRIDAY 3/14
OFFICIAL LAST NIGHT ALBUM RELEASE PARTY
W/ TOMMY SUNSHINE, JUNKIE XL & BLACK GHOSTS
Vice Lounge / 304 E Sixth Street (& San Jacinto)
Moby DJ set set Time: 12:00 AM

Those gigs alone would have made the whole experience worthwhile for me; and ya it would have been nice to sit in on a few of the panels as well I guess.
