MyColors From Stardock

Stardock Design First off I need to add this bit of a disclaimer. I have been a WindowBlinds user for many years and it has been a part of my default install of any Windows OS since I first started using it. For the last two years I have also been a subscriber to their Object Desktop suite – of which WindowBlinds is a part – of enhancements for Windows. this year though my subscription ran out and I was unable to afford the renewal. However after my initial look at their new digital distribution platform called Impulse the folks were good enough to extend my subscription an additional year which is how I have been able to take a look at this new product – MyColors – from the company and I thank them for that.

One of the great things with WindowBlinds was the ability to skin; or theme, you desktop in just about anyway you want due to the incredibly large community that built up around the product. the only problem was that in many cases this didn’t include things like your desktop wallpaper or any of the widgets that you might be running. Some designers did include options for skinning those as well but it wasn’t a common thing. this meant that if you wanted a common look right across your desktop you had to do some hunting for matching themes and wallpapers.

With MyColors however this has changed as you can now select a complete theme package and apply it to your system with a simple one click action. The big difference is that while the WindowBlinds themes were made by community members and made freely available MyColors has become more a marketplace where the best themes available can be purchased thereby providing these creators with a way to finally make some money for all their hard work. there are some free ones available as well but the majority of the themes are available for anywhere from $9.95 up to the $20.00 range – but the quality alone makes it well worth the price.

When you install and start up MyColors for the first time you have one free theme package available besides the regular Vista Aero theme

The third theme you can see in the list is on of the other current free themes that I downloaded from the MyColors site. The fun part though comes when you decide to go do some shopping for new themes by clicking on the More Themes button and switch to the easy to use viewer of the additional theme packages available. This won shows the section called Rides and is devoted to car buffs

MyColors Rides

And then for the sports fans there are actually three sections available – NHL, NBA and of course the Collegiate Teams section

MyColors Sports

The beauty of the MyColors program is that everything is basically a simple one click operation – whether it be selecting the theme package to apply to your system or viewing all the ones that are available via their theme store. Plus if there isn’t enough there there to attract your attention you can always click on the View More button which will take you to the MyColors site where you can check out even more choices.

As much of a fan as I am of WindowBlinds I have to admit that MyColors has made a compelling case for replacing it as my default method of changing my themes. Even though this is more of a paying propositions that the WindowBlinds alternative with its extensive community of free themes I like the idea of paying for a more complete theme package of extremely high quality work.

This option won’t be for everyone but if you like the idea of being able to reward some excellent graphic artists for their work and the ease of being able to modify your desktop theme then this could be an alternative worth looking into.

Could You Be An Impulse Buyer?

Impulse from Stardock - your new online software store

With more and more software; whether it is games or the more standard desktop applications, being made available via the web way to distribute them easily and also for buyers to pay for easily is becoming more and more important. One of the most well known of these digital distribution systems is Valve’s Steam system for game distribution that is gaining real traction. However not everyone is a gamer and instead would like for a similar type of thing for regular software.

Enter Impulse by Stardock.

Now I am a big fan of the Stardock suite of programs having been a user of their Object Desktop suite until my subscription ran out recently. I personally wouldn’t want to be without their WindowBlinds program but they are a lot more than that as well and up until the release of Impulse their program line up was available as well via their Stardock Central distribution application which was the predecessor to Impulse.

With Impulse however they have updated from their SCD application and at the same time have opened it up to all developers of games and other types of software. As they said in the press release on June 17 2008

“Impulse is a platform first, a store second,” said Brad Wardell, president and CEO of Stardock Corp. “Our primary objective with Impulse is to address the issues users have with their Windows experience today. That includes being able to boot up a new PC, install Impulse, and then be able to press a button and have it install all of your software and games with one click.”

To this end, Stardock has been working with major PC game publishers and software developers to bring as many titles onto Impulse over the next several months. For developers and publishers, Impulse supports localized currencies, custom pricing models for affiliates, exclusive store items on a per-partner basis, publisher controlled availability, and more. For consumers, Impulse is expected to have the largest selection of digitally-available software on the market within its first year of operation. Currently Impulse features more than 100 games and software applications.

Of course being the cranky old fart that I am the first thing I did was to check out what payment methods were supported and much to my delight as with all Stardock products they have support for PayPal. For me this is always a deal clincher as that is the only way I pay for what I want online so I was really happy to see this. I know for me that when I go looking for software to buy know I’ll be checking the Impulse site to see if what I want is available and if it is they’ll be getting my money.

While they are still filling out their line of software from other companies being made available you can see from the screenshot that Corel has already jumped on board so here’s hoping more and more will do the same.

Now to go and install their client and check out what I can add to my list of software to buy.

Getting ready to say good-bye to Object Desktop

Object Desktop For those of you not familar with Object Desktop from Stardock it is their package of all their different utility programs like WindowBlinds and Iconpackager which are among the tools available allowing you to individualize your desktop. I have been a happy user of WindowBlinds for a long time and I upgraded to Stardock’s Object Desktop because of all the other utilities that came as part of the package.

Whether it be from things like WindowBlinds to DesktopX to their skinning editor Stardock provided excellent tools that could let anyone personalize their desktop to something plain and simple to something you might see in a horror movie slash sci-fi flick. Along with that there is also the thriving community at WinCustomize where you can find themes, cursors, icons and wallpapers to satisfy just about anyone’s needs.

As with all really good things though Object Desktop comes at a hard dollar price of $69.00 which considering all the programs that are a part of the package it is a hellva deal. Of course they have the renewal price which again is more than fair but unfortunately for me even that is now out of my range so the time is coming very shortly where I will have to say good-bye to an excellent product.

Before that happens though I may just grab a copy of DesktopX and see if I can really personalize my desktop into something cool and functional. Now don’t get me wrong I’ll still be able to use the products I already have but I will miss out on all the good stuff that I think Stardock is working towards.

I feel this because between the WindowBlinds engine becoming a root level service on Vista and Deskscapes becoming the main engine behind Vista’s animated desktop the future for further integration of Stardock handling future Windows desktops is a real possibility. I say this because of what I see happening to the Windows move to modularizing of the operating system and Stardock is perfectly positioned to be able to offer a feature rich desktop module if that time comes about.

In the meantime though if you are looking for a way to enrich and individualize your desktop I can’t suggest a better way that with the Stardock products.

Boot Screen Changer

I just ran across a fun little util at TheTechTurf called BootSkin from Stardock, makers of such creations as WindowsBlinds, which was the subject of several posts and the prize in a contest here at Winextra. Made a couple years ago, there is no Vista support, though StarDock still claims one is in the works. They recommend you NOT try this program on a Vista box.

DreamScene = cool and the best … Give your head a shake

Sorry but this idea rates a big DUH! Sorry Josh but DreamScenes was not and is not the best and coolest Ultimate Extra feature for Vista; not that there has been anything really cool come out of that farce. So to suggest that spreading this resource pig onto the rest of the iterations of Vista is a cool thing is ridiculous.

Currently DreamScenes is only available for Vista Ultimate but the news is that Microsoft has basically handed over development; and distribution, to Stardock whose DeskScape’s is an extension of the original DreamScenes which by the way was a joint development between Microsoft and Stardock. With the handing of DreamScenes back to Stardock Microsoft has effectively removed the whole idea as a Vista Ultimate bonus from the table – so once more Ultimate purchasers got ripped off.

As a result of Stardock taking back over control of DreamScenes/DeskScapes the program will be made available to all versions of Vista. Now I have used both DreamScenes and Stardock’s extension of it [DeskScape] and each of the three times that I have tried it the feature remained active for about half a day before I turned it off. Each time I did I was convinced even further that the whole idea is nothing short of pointless; not to mention being a real drain on resources.

For those that don’t know what this whole DreamScene/DeskScape thing is about the short version is – image having animated or video wallpaper instead of the static wallpaper we have now. Sure this might sound really cool but if you take a second and really think about it the whole idea makes no sense. Afterall just how much of your computing day is spent looking at only your desktop. I don’t know about you but between my two monitors I usually have over three quarters of each desktop being occupied by open and running programs. So in effect you have a resource hog continuously running a looping graphic behind all your open windows – where the hell is the usefulness in that.

Don’t get me wrong I really like Stardock products and am a licensed user of their Object Desktop suite but I just don’t get this product and I definitely don’t appreciate being ripped off the way I have been as far as the so-called Ultimate version has done. As far as I am concerned it has been nothing short of an Ultimate marketing sham.

WindowBlinds 6 winner announced.

Stardock - Your Edge in Software While the overall response was a little less than I was hoping for I am pleased given the readership of WinExtra at the current time that I did get the good reasons that I did. It made the decision process a little hard but a winner must be selected and I have picked Kari’s comment as the winner. Here is her comment in full:

I deserve a copy of WindowBlinds. I’m a former network admin who went back to school at 26 to get papers that prove I can be a network admin…if that makes any sense. Because of that I tend to be surrounded with 18-21 year olds. When I look at them I notice that I’m just like them. Most of them even have the same stuff on their laptop, Vista with Aero and some Dreamscape in the background. I want my laptop to stand out. I want them to look at my laptop and go, “Yours looks so much cooler than mine!” So it’s a little selfish and superficial. But I was “the nerd” all through grammar school and high school and now that I have accepted and learned to love being “the nerd” I want to be the coolest nerd in school!

Windows totally needs WindowBlinds. Even with super-duper new features I’ve mentioned above, Windows Vista Ultimate, still looks like every other desktop. I know it can look amazing. I even want to start making my own sets to put on WinCustomize so other people have even more choices to help make Windows not so Window-y.

So Kari please contact me at steven @ winextra dot com with a valid email address that I can pass along to the folks at Stardock so they can send you your login information to be able to collect your prize.

I really wish I had been able to award a prize to all the entrants because I think they deserved it; or at least a coupon off for Object Desktop which is an excellent way to get all of the Stardock products or for the newly released WindowBlinds 6.0

My thanks for everyone who took part in the contest and hopefully should other sponsors want to pony up some prizes I will run other contests in the near future and a big thanks to Stardock for being involved.

So Kari .. get a hold of me as soon as you can so you can enjoy your copy of WindowBlinds.

Off The Cuff: Throwing Stones

I would have had this up earlier but new hardware (headset and mike) are giving me nothing but grief. In the meantime though it’s fun when people start throwing stones at Microsoft .. what’s that saying about glass houses?
