For the life of me I couldn’t figure out why I was having such a bitch of a time getting my email clients to use my new domain SMTP server for my out going mail. No matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get it to work – kept getting error telling me that it couldn’t connect to the SMTP server.
Needless to say I was getting more than a little pissed; but not as pissed as when I found out the reason.
Apparently my ISP here in Canada – BellNet – along with a growing number of ISP’s in North American are locking down Port 25 so that you have to go through their SMTP servers rather than one of your choosing.
The reason being given is that this way they can better monitor traffic for spammer activity. What they don’t say of course is that they can monitor your outbound traffic as well; and we all know what can be done with a good packet sniffer don’t we.
