It’s always the little things that can do you in

Well it looks like WinExtra (aka Steven Hodson, aka codenut :) ) is on some-one’s blogging radar judging from the traffic out of Robert Scoble’s post about my observation last night. In his response he raises an interesting point about what catches the eye of the A-List; and down, bloggers which was further added to in his post’s comments.

For Robert it appears that the visibility of the blogger’s name is important

One thing that’s hurting WinExtra’s ability to get people to link to it? I can’t find a name on the site for the author. I generally don’t like linking to blogs that I don’t know who authors them.

Then there is commenter Munir for whom the date is important

I also won’t link to a post that’s not dated. If I can’t find it within five seconds I’ll exclude the post no matter how valubale I think the information is.

I’ll even link to posts several days old because of the information value. But I must have the date, even if I don’t use it in my post. I need to know if I’m about to link to soemthing posted six months ago.

Well the date thing I have covered but the issue of the author’s name is one that unfortunately I thought was visible; or at least my long time nick codenut, but it appears that when I changed the theme for over Christmas the theme author neglected to include the author field as part of the theme.

That does raise a question as well – if you are a blogger who places a value on the validity of posts that have the authors name displayed do you give more value to a “real name” or is a nickname of equal value?

And on the whole what do the A-List bloggers look for for “authority” in new and growing blogs that want to move up the ranks? Sure there are those great <cough> top 10 lists that will tell you all the tricks to try but when it comes down to it, it is always the little things that can make a difference.

Pimping for money or pimping for stuff – what’s the diff….

The big topic of the last day or two has been the release of the Zune player from Microsoft and the slamming it has taken throughout the blogsphere.

I’m not going to talk about Zune itself; after all I’m not on Microsoft’s blogger kiss ass list so I couldn’t even begin to offer a review of it if I wanted to. Unlike Om Malik though who got one and then proceeded to inform us on how bad it was.

Here’s the thing though – he get’s a couple hundred dollar toy given to him so that he can do his mojo and potentially influence folks to buy it; but he never tries it. No he goes by all the negative press it had already gotten and gives it a thumbs down. As Ed Bott put it – “The worst non-review ever.”

Well that was money well spent wasn’t it Microsoft. At least the two that you sent to Robert Scoble got an honest try-out; plus he only gets to keep one of them.

That is only two of the influencers that got peppered with a Zune at around $250.00 each so one can imagine the amount of money that was spent getting these things into the hands of the A-List bloggers.

So in effect each of the bloggers who got one and wrote something about it – good or bad – got compensated for their time to the tune of 250.00 bucks. Not bad for fifteen or twenty minutes work plus you have a new toy – damn .. nice work if you can get it.

Wait a minute though .. aren’t these the same folks who called bloggers that signed up at reviewME nothing more than pimps and prostitutes who should wash their hands after writing their works of shill.

So let me get this straight. It’s okay for some A-List blogger to get a $250.00 toy on the premise they will write about it; not even taking into account the advertising dollars they will earn as people hit their pages, but some-one who get’s paid cash to actually try a product and write a review about it is nothing but blogger scum.

Can some-one explain to me the difference here – ’cause I’m not seeing it.

are bloggers a bunch of RSS snobs?

With the proliferation of blogs of all types came the rise of RSS feeds like never before. It seems that you can’t turn anywhere without seeing those little orange icons that indicate that an RSS feed is available for the site.

And with advocates like Robert Scoble singing the praises of the medium where ever they go you get the impression that if a site doesn’t offer an RSS feed then they have no business being on the web – especially if they are a company of any type.

However with his latest post – Windows Vista blog, form over function – he re-iterates his feeling that RSS feeds trump website design. Which leads me to wonder if the RSS evangelists are nothing more than snobs.

The impression I get from him; and other’s like him, is that we should all just slip back to the day of Lynx and live in the world of RSS, podcasts and videocasts. One advantage to that is at least we wouldn’t have to put up with the incessant browser oneupmanship crap :) .
