PJ’s Forum Round-up 24.11.08

We had a relatively subdued but good week in the forums.  Nobody died in the flame fests and everyone seems reasonably sane, still.  Mrs. Max has decided to return to our flock, welcome back.

The Brits have a happy group of folks called the BNP.  First I’d heard of them.  Apparently they aren’t so happy anymore since their membership list leaked.  *covers mouth*  Oppps.  I don’t think they’re gonna get a Mulligan on that one.

Carbon watchdog getting prepped for 2009 launch

Orbiting Carbon ObservatoryOne of the pressing concerns environmentally is getting a grip on how much damage is being done to our atmosphere by the carbon diaoxide that is being spewed out daily. to try and figure this out NASA will be launching the Orbiting Carbon Observatory in January 2009.

the observatory is NASA’s first spacecraft designed to study carbon dioxide and it has just arrived at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California from where it will be launched. The spacecraft will spend 2 years in a 438-mile, near polar, sun-synchronous orbit where every 16 days it will map the globe and collect information about the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.

This observatory will let scientists to see where CO2 is collecting in our atmosphere and what of our activities are contributing to it; as well as seeing what parts of the world are acting as sinks. Most important though it will allow more accurate measurements of total CO2 in the atmosphere which will help in building future models of climate change.

From the Pipeline – 8.11.08

For those few – very few that might have wondered what happened to tonight’s Discussion Point podcast the simple fact was that there wasn’t anything from during the day’s activities that seem to be interesting enough to talk about. That doesn’t mean that there wasn’t some good stuff in today’s FriendFeed pipeline.

17 Electric Cars You Must Know About [nw] :: Treehugger – green is all the rage these days – which I guess is a good thing – as is the idea of electric cars.

The ITER Complex: A Gorgeous Green Enclave [nw] :: inhabitat – and this is really cool in a new world on earth type of way.

Today just seemed to lag with nothing that really seem to spark any ideas worth writing about but I did find more than a few things of interest in today’s FriendFeed pipeline so without any further ado here’s some fun stuff.

The weekend is just around the corner and with the weather supposedly being sunny and warm I imagine the blogosphere will go through a quiet couple of days as people recharge their batteries for the week ahead. I guess that sort of thing would make human beings the first solar powered machine :) . In the meantime here’s a few things that caught my eye today in my FriendFeed pipeline.

Who’s Going to Say the “P” Word? :: Mark Evans – Mark thinks we’re all a bunch of chickens for not calling these social aggregators what the really are – portals.

Gear & gadgets fit for the Dark Knight :: SlipperyBrick – okay I admit it – I’m a Batman fan and I just had to pass along a few things that I think are down right cool.

NASA ‘nanosats’ to form smart network in space :: c|net – damn you never know what pies NASA has its fingers into do you … interesting idea though.

The New Yahoo: Sticky, Viral, And Most Of All, Friendly :: TechCrunch – I guess since Yahoo is doing whatever it can to make itself look like the meanest mofo of a porcupine to keep the Beast of Redmond at bay this makes some sort of sense.
