Off the Cuff: iPhone obsolete, defending capitalism & stuff

Apple iPhone obsolete Talk about a Class A effort at riling up the Mac fanboy’s. I mean really – coming out and suggesting that His Job’ness would even entertain the thought of planned obsolesce for the treasured iPhone - that takes a strong suit of asbestos underwear. However that is exactly the argument that Seth Porges in his guest posting is putting forth over at CrunchGear where he goes through point by missing features point. [via CrunchGear]

Money for something In a pretty plain and straight forward post Adam Ostrow makes the point that music isn’t free folks and even though content businesses are trying to find ways to monetize their product – music – downloading copyrighted material is still against the law. As he puts it – some with business sense started a business who then found some-one with a marketable talent and signed them to a contract where they both made money. It comes back to my old argument folks – at some point people want to get paid for their work. [via Adam Ostrow]

It's easy to be a potty mouth on the net Trust Robert Cringely to start a firestorm – which I am sure that this week’s post about AT&T getting seduced by Apple will start. That isn’t the part that I found the most fun though. No .. that part was at the end of the post when he starts talking about the ill-mouthed anonymous commenter’s and how he wonders if they’ll still be so potty mouthed on a video version of Robert’s blog. Like him I can’t wait ….. after all it’s easier to be an idiot when everyone thinks you’re a dog. [via I, Cringely @ PBS.org]

moby gets it…

What a way to solidify a fan base

Moby is one of my all time favorite musicians/D.J’s and his blog has been a regular in my feed reader ever since I found out he had one. So what does this have to do with the Internet and technology?

Simple .. he gets the whole idea of make art and music accessible to everyone without making you feel like a criminal.

In a post today he announced that the moby.com site was in the process of being updated and as a part of that update he was opening up a new section called film music. In this section he making available a set of 60 tracks of music for download

and here’s the biggie(well, at least i think so)…there’s a new part of moby.com called ‘film music’. it’s essentially a function that allows independent and non-profit filmmakers to download and use my music for free. we’re starting with about 60 pieces of eclectic, unreleased, film music, but over-time i’ll continue to update it and add more music.
these 60 pieces of music can be downloaded and used for free by student filmmakers and indie filmmakers and, basically, anyone making a non-commercial* film, be it 2 minutes long or 400 minutes long.

The only caveat being that the music must be used in the following manner

if you’re a filmmaker(or are in need of free music for a non-commercial film or video)you can sign up and download and use this music for free.
i have a lot of friends in the independent film world, and their biggest complaint is that it’s either expensive or onerous to license music for their films.
so that’s why i’m making a lot of my music available for free use for non-profit, independent films.

He goes to add that even if your work of art goes onto make humongous piles of cash you can still use the music as long as you get a commercial licence from him; which he says won’t be onerous or a wallet killer. then to boot that money will be donated to charity.

Way to go moby .. this alone would make me buy more your music if the wallet would allow it .. regardless though it has made me an even bigger fan.

To bad the rest of the media industry can’t get it the way moby has.

Laughing all the way to the bank

Watching a movie through a keyhole - Now that's fun. One of the big pushes these days seems to be cell phones that can play music and videos. Can someone please explain to me .. WTF … I mean call me stupid but why would anyone in their right mind want to watch TV or a movie on a piddly assed cell phone screen.

Come on folks let’s get a grip here for a minute and think this through. You are going to take all that time to download what has to be an inferior quality copy of some TV show or movie and watch it on a screen the size of a 20 pack of smokes – at best. Granted some movies and such aren’t worth watching in high quality to begin with but still what is the point. Doing something like that reminds me of seeing Harry Chapin live at the Orpheum Theater sitting so high in the cheap seats my back was against the wall – literally. At least that was worth it but the idea of watch Friends re-runs on a cell phone makes me shudder.

Putting that silliness aside for a moment what about the cost? You think that your provider is gonna just flip a switch and the movie will be on your cell phone in all it’s glory – not bloody likely. It’s gonna cost you and I bet it’s gonna cost you a lot. You think your cell phone bill is high now – just wait until your little darlings start downloading the newest rap videos or honey next to you grabs the occasional porn adult video for you both to watch.

Talk about paying top dollar for lowering your entertainment expectations. There is only going to be one winner here and guess what – it isn’t you. No, the only winner is your cell phone provider as they run laughing to the bank with your wallet in tow.

Hey you bunch of thieves…

Well that is what Universal Music Group thinks that anyone with an MP3 player is. To quote David Geffen (NYT – subscription req.):

“Each of these devices is used to store unpaid-for material.”

As a result of that statement a boycott of UMG products is being called for and spearheaded by GigaOM:

All right folks lets teach these guys a lesson. Just don’t buy any of their music for one week. Just one week say no to UMG. He will realize that people actually buy music, not steal it. If anyone wants to put up a wiki with all the UMG artists/labels to help this digital disobedience movement, let me know. No point reasoning with these guys. – Om Malik

I for one agree whole heartedly with Om and would gladly display one of the badges he is asking a non graphically challenged person to design.
