I’ve been watching this story develop over the weekend as mommyblogger after mommyblogger has been expressing their moral outrage over an ad being run by Motrin (see embedded video below). Now I have read every post referencing the ad that has come in over my feeds this weekend and today and all I can do is shake my head.
I even got my wife to look at it and asked her what she thought about the ad. Did she find it offensive or insulting? Her response pretty well boiled down to “anyone getting upset about that ad must have their PMS set to pause“. She didn’t find the ad insulting in anyway rather she just found it “strange“, and this is a woman who has nothing to do with computers or the Internet (yet).
The thing that is really amazing to me is the uproar itself over what really is a pretty stupid ad. Yet it has women and brand pundits calling the company behind Motrin all kinds of names none of which are kind to say the least. Like I’ve said – I’ve watched this ad numerous times and for the life of me I don’t get where it is insulting or demeaning of women. It makes me really wonder when was the last time that any of these people watched the ads being run on television.
After all you can turn on a television at any time of the day and see advertising that treat men and women like bona fide idiots non-stop. Just about any ad that has a man in it depicts him as a clueless, moronic idiot that couldn’t think for himself if his life depended on it. Any advertising that involves a man, woman and/or children the man is fair game for ridicule and suggestions that they wouldn’t know a backbone if it slapped them in the face.
Then we come to the ads with women in them. If they are mothers they are nothing more than twits who let their children climb all over the furniture with muddy shoes with a stupid smile on their face. Or we have the one’s who watch as their little darlings draw on walls or break stuff and do nothing more than turn to some imaginary bald headed guy to save her. Or how about the ones that have a woman standing with a great big smile on her face as kids traipse though the house and the freshly washed floors. Hello .. anyone home behind that pasted on smile?
Come folks I can see how the Motrin ad might have been a bit of a dumb play but when compared to how men and women are depicted in the mainstream advertising this Motrin outrage is stupid. If you are wanting to get all high and mighty over how you are being treated to in advertising I assure you there are a lot worse out there than some stupid ad about a pill on some web site.
I’m sorry but this ad from Motrin is the last one that people should be getting pissy over. There are a lot worse out there but that means you would have to pull yourselves away from Twitter and other such ego boosting media tools and look at the rest of the world. Then you might really see some advertising that deserves getting your panties in a bunch over.
oh and here’s the ad that got a bunch of folks all pissy
Hey, like this post? Why not share it with a buddy?
