The only good reason to be at SXSW

moby at SXSW There are more conferences, un-conferences, meet-up or any number of different gatherings that seem to get larger every year. While my chances of ever A) wanting to attend any of them or B) being able to afford to go or C) even being invited in the first place is pretty slim I gotta admit this year’s SXSW conference (party) would have been a real joy for me.

It’s not that I really could of cared less who was presenting or who was screwing up some stupid ass keynote interview. No the real reason I would have love to gone is only because of one person who was slated to be there.

It turns out that Moby was booked into Austin for several gigs:

TUESDAY 3/11

Sponsored by Paste Magazine and OurStage
Stubb’s Outdoor Amphitheater
Featuring: Moby (DJ set), London-based DJ duo Addictive TV, Kaki King, Sydney Wayser

THURSDAY 3/13
THE GIBSON ROOM
SXSW DEBUT: LITTLE DEATH NYC Sponsored by Gibson Guitars

LOU REED TRIBUTE

FRIDAY 3/14
OFFICIAL LAST NIGHT ALBUM RELEASE PARTY

Those gigs alone would have made the whole experience worthwhile for me; and ya it would have been nice to sit in on a few of the panels as well I guess.

Applies equally well to Web 2.0

Keep it coming .. momma needs a new jet Moby for those who might not recognize the the name is a musician and DJ; one of the best DJ’s in the field in my own opinion. Well the other day he had a post on his blog talking about the whole move by bands to break away from the labels. Specifically about the deal that Madonna did for $120mil with Live Nation.

In the post he asked a very simple question:

i’m not criticizing madonna, not at all, but i sometimes wonder what people do with their excess money, and when do they have enough?
we live in a culture wherein there’s a prevailing ethos that you should always have more.

[...]

i mean, what do you do with $50 million dollars that you can’t do with $40 million dollars?
and what do you do with $40 million dollars that you can’t do with $30 million dollars?
and so on.

In an industry where we bandy about billions of dollars and are always looking for even higher valuations on copycat ideas one has to wonder just how many jets does one company need or how many billions of dollars do you need in the bank before enough is enough.

Off Topic: The Artform of DJ’s

DJ Tiesto Live - click for larger view With today being one of those silly ass Civic holidays we have here in Canada I decided to take some time and chill out watching some video concerts of some of my favorite music and it was during watching DJ Tiesto recorded live that I realized something.

I have always like DJ’s like him and could appreciate what a talent it must take to reach the top level of the profession; but as I watched him perform I also realized that DJ’s like Tiesto, Van Dyk, Oakenfold and Moby have a deep appreciation for music of all types. They have a knowledge of how all these different types of music can be blended together and reach a basic part of our souls – making us an integral part of the experience.

If you don’t think so then I suggest putting aside what ever preconceived notions you might have of DJ’s and the music and watch them as they perform their craft – watch the people as they feel the music. It is an art form at its best.
