Daily Edition – Microsoft screwed if they do, screwed if they don’t

For much of the past week Microsoft, and Seth MacFarlane, have been getting nothing but flack over Microsoft’s sponsorship of a Family Guy special coming up on Fox. Then today word comes that Microsoft after a meeting with Seth MacFarlane and Alex Borstein decide after seeing a run through of the show to pull their sponsorship.

Needless to say the blog posts are rolling in calling Microsoft all kinds of stupid over pulling out. In other words just another case of Microsoft being screwed no matter which way they go.

With that as the background for tonight’s show Sean and Mark have at it discussing the conflicting attitudes when it comes to Microsoft and their advertising campaigns. Personally I wonder if the same uproar would have happened if it was Apple in this situation instead of Microsoft.

Anyway … enjoy the show.

In tonight’s show Mark “Rizzn” Hopkins and myself share our thoughts about advertising and blogging in light of a guest post at TechCrunch by Shelby Bonnie where he calls for the killing of CPM ad models. As well we spend a few minutes talking about Microsoft and how it seems to be slowly changing. Our starting point is the recent interview that Steve Ballmer did with Michael Arrington from TechCrunch.

Will Google’s ChromeOS allow alternate browsers?

googleOS Jason Kincaid over at TechCrunch has a post up about some (suspicious) screenshots of Google’s ChromeOS. While he questions the validity of the screenshots themselves I’ve been wondering about something else when it comes to Google’s entry into the operating system arena.

Now given that ChromeOS is being billed as the next generation web-based operating system one has to wonder if it will be held to the same anti-competitive standards that Microsoft is. By the looks of the screenshots, and much of the talk surrounding it, ChromeOS will be the home of Google applications.

However given Google’s dominance (an argument used against Microsoft) will they also have to allow users to choose some other browser to be ‘installed’ on their web OS platform?

After all Microsoft has reached a point that it is shipping Windows without a default browser installed and users can select and install a browser of their choice as the default browser.

Shouldn’t Google operating system be held to the same standard?

The Social Media-ization of the Presidency and its Longhorn moment

barack-obama

Note: I do not normally write about politics let alone the highly charged politics of the United States. However the Obama presidency through its use of the web and social media has raised some interesting non-political questions I want to look at.

While much of the attention about the use of social media and the presidency is directed at Barack Obama it was actually Howard Dean who first utilized the then nascent social media tools. Unfortunately though, it was also Howard Dean who was shown how quickly social media could turn the tables on anyone and within the almost proverbial blink of an eye.

With Obama the integration of social media into the political spectrum was solidified. From his announcement to run, the primaries, the election and now the day to day affairs of the White House the Obama team has made social media an integral part of their communication platform to the American people.
