Vista copy/move – The Service Pack 1 RC1 Follow-up

Windows Vista For anyone who read this blog you will probably remember my posts regarding Vista’s apparent inability to copy or move over an network to an XP machine. You will also probably remember how I said I wouldn’t be going anywhere near the Release Candidate of Vista’s Service Pack 1. Well …. what can I say … the irritation of not being able to use my machine the way it is suppose to got to be too much and as you can tell from my post earlier about the new Microsoft Download Center Beta I bit the bullet and grabbed my very own copy of what would hopefully be my salvation.

After what has to be the longest install of a service pack that I have experienced; and yes I know it’s only a release candidate so I accept the time spent, I was all ready to get to the business of finding out if the problem had been fixed. So from a fresh reboot and with nothing else running as far as using the network I proceeded to open up Explorer and drag the first victim video file from its folder on my Vista machine over to the mapped folder that resided on the XP machine in the next room.

And waited …. and waited …. and waited ….

Then all of a sudden I had this wonderful dialog box being displayed:

What happens when trying to copy from a Vista machine to a networked XP machine

I gotta admit this one still makes me scratch my head in wonderment after all the file was on my machine … the one I was sitting at .. the one I was trying to copy from and here Vista was telling me it couldn’t access the file and that I should check check the network setting that was already letting me access the XP machine through Explorer on Vista.

So being the hopeful optimist – hey it happens once in awhile – I clicked on the Try Again button hoping that maybe it just need a few minutes to figure out what was going on. This is the dialog box I got in return for my optimism:

and this is the reward I get for being optimistic

Needless to say I wanted the file copied before I died so I canceled out of this state of ridiculousness shaking my head wondering just what Microsoft was thinking when it came to Vista.

Not wanting to be totally depressed over the whole situation I decided to do some experimenting and see just what would copy between the two machines and this is where it gets really strange.

First I wondered if I could copy a video file from the XP machine to the Vista machine from the Vista machine and to my bewilderment it worked like a charm. Mind you it wasn’t the speediest experience but hey it worked. So I rightfully concluded that if that would work so would any other file and so it wasn’t a problem to do with XP and the network.

With that thought in mind I picked a text file in my Documents folder on Vista and dragged it in Explorer over to another mapped folder of the XP machine … damn the copy dialog box didn’t even display and the file was where I had copied it to.

Well that worked like a dream so next up was a JPEG graphic file .. drag … drop … presto there it was in the folder on the XP machine. Wow … that was as fast as the text file. So what to try next .. oh ya … an MP3 file … let’s give that a shot.

So selecting the lucky file in Vista I dragged it over to the mapped folder on the XP machine and let go. Lo’ and behold the Copy dialog box displays and the progress bar indicated that the file is being copied over. Wow .. it was copying … amazing.

The end result of all this?

Well it would seem that the Service Pack hasn’t made one bit of difference to the problems I was experiencing despite what had been listed in their published changelog that Long Zheng was good enough to publish. I realize that some will say that this is just something I am experiencing and must be related to my setup. The problem with that wishful thinking is that it is just that – wishful thing – especially considering that more than few forums around the web are reporting exactly the same; or very similar, problems.

Where does this leave me?

Well as far as I am concerned considering my needs – pretty well screwed. Yes I could wait until the RTM version of the Service Pack is available but that’s in the new year and I really don’t know if I have the stamina to wait that long. So I have to very carefully consider saying good-bye to Vista and actually make the plunge back to XP. I can tell you this though – if I do go back to XP I won’t be having anything to do with Vista and even though I’ve been bitten badly by Vista I’ll be waiting for any OS upgrades until Windows 7 goes Gold.

In the meantime Microsoft has left a really bad taste in my mouth and I am feeling just a tad bit ripped off considering that a core functionality of an OS is so badly borked and they still took money from loyal customers for a faulty operating system. I hope Bill and all those shareholders are happy because I know a shitload of customers aren’t.

As for migrating back to XP – well I’ll let you know how it goes and maybe prepare a list of all the things to make sure you have in place for those folks looking to make the same move over the coming months – which I am sure is going to happen.

Microsoft Download Center Beta – SilverLight Edition

MDC page logo Today I decided that I had had enough aggravation with this whole Vista copy/move thing that I face multiple times in a day that I figure I had nothing to lose by biting the bullet and installing the just released Service Pack 1  RC1 of Vista in the hope that it would fix the problem. I’ll have more on that later and trust me it ain’t pretty but that isn’t to topic of the post.

What is the topic is that when I went to grab the download files for SP1 RC1 I was given an opportunity to check out the next generation of Microsoft’s Download Center (MDC) being brought to you in all the SilverLight glory possible. Now just to clarify one thing at this point – while the beta of the new MDC is presented in SilverLight and you can search or browse for available downloads you can’t actually download the files from this beta site. When you click on any download button you are transferred to the current MDC download page for the file. So this is a case of look but don’t touch I guess :)

Below you will see the screen shots of various parts of the beta site and while it was a little slow loading at this point I kinda liked the whole look and feel of the beta site. Some folks who don’t already have the SilverLight plugin; which also worked both Firefox and Safari because I already had the plugin installed – although it took Firefox longer to recognize that then it did with Safari, will have to download and install the SilverLight plugin.

Once that is done you will see much of what the screenshots show.

The landing page for MDC Beta:

The New Files listing page:

MDC - New Files List - Click for larger view

The Popular Download listing page:

Search Results page with Download options:

While I am sure that is not all the available pages on the site it will give you a little idea of what Microsoft has in the works for the next generation Download Center.

Is a muzzle being tightened around Microsoft bloggers?

Microsoft blogger's newest accessory As we move towards a new year it may turn out that we look back fondly on on the pre-2008 years as the Robert Scoble years of Microsoft transparency via the world of blogging.

Because if what is being talked about now – or rather not being talked about – within the hallowed halls of Redmond there is a PR muzzle being readied to make sure any news coming from Redmond follows the company line.

In a follow up to posts by Mary Jo Foley and Kevin Yanks about the deafening silence that seems to be surrounding anything to do with Internet Explorer 8 Long Zheng has a post describing a new position being created within Microsoft being billed as as a highly strategic role. The position – Director of Windows Client Disclosure – means that everything; whether it be PR pieces or blog posts that has to do with Windows 7, Vista, XP and related products, has to go through this Director’s office:

The Director for Windows Client Disclosure will play a key role in defining the communications agenda while grounding these disclosures in the technical and strategic realities of the Windows Operating System Business. This thought leader will also be responsible for making sure that there are zero surprises in our disclosure plans.

The Director for Windows Client Disclosure will be responsible for creating and communicating disclosure guidelines and processes across the Windows Team including Engineering, Marketing, Product Management, the sales force (working with Product Marketing), and operations.

So it would seem that the Scoble day’s of blogging freedom may be coming to an end and one has to wonder if this isn’t also a part of the Ozzie-fication of Microsoft because if there is one thing that had remained constant at Microsoft it is the silence of Ray Ozzie since he was named as Gate’s heir apparent.

The question is though will the Blue Monster be as easily put back in its cage without making a sound. A lot has been made over the last year of a new Microsoft, a Microsoft that listens, a Microsoft that isn’t evil and one has to wonder if all those blogging voices of Microsoft will easily be silenced or will we begin to see even more Mini-Microsoft or MSFTExtrememakeover types of blogs begin to popup.

The road forward over the past couple of years hasn’t been the easiest for Microsoft as it learns to deal with a new world of communication power which when it comes down to they can no longer control. If they do go ahead with this new Director of Blogger Muzzling Windows Client Disclosure they may make Wall Street and Corporate America happy but I wonder at what cost to their employees and one of the world’s largest userbase’s of their software.

Somehow I don’t think that muzzle is going to sit too comfortable.

Vista SP1 RC1 Redux

Windows Vista SP RC1 - To download or not to Download You know it’s not fair. You get all settled in and ready to run the Alamo right up to the last minute and the time that Service Pack 1 for Vista goes gold. Then you think it should be safe enough to install and hopefully fix the problems you are having without breeding any more of those little buggers called bugs.

Then two things happen and you find yourself wondering if maybe .. just maybe you should get the gauze out and click on that old download button that will begin the road to installing the one Release Candidate you said you wouldn’t.

First it’s a post by Bill Brenner who comes right out and says that it’s because I’m a cranky old fart that I won’t be able to resist installing it. Which he follows up with a quick tale that relates the experience of Brandon LeBlanc and how well everything is running for him after installing RC1.

Now I could have gotten my cranky on even more and said no way .. I’m still not installing it but no sooner had I read Bill’s post than along came Ed Bott and his high five report of his experience of installing RC1. That would have been okay .. I could have handled that except when Ed just had to go and report that one of the biggest improvements he had seen was to to with the network problem that is haunting me.

It was bad enough he was writing this but then he had to go an throw in a few graphs just to really mess me up along with just how much of an improvement he was seeing when copying files over a network to an XP machine

As you can see, the file transfers under Vista SP1 were dramatically faster than the Vista RTM times. For the directory full of many small files, the performance increase throughput was more than 300%; for the large files, the speed increase was roughly 260%. Note that you can expect similar results when transferring files from Vista to systems running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.

It sure seems that the evidence it there – the main problem I am having with Vista sure seems to have been fixed and from all the good things that are being said about how good RC1 is I feel like I’ve had the carpet pulled out from under me.

What is a cranky old fart suppose to do now – huh … to download or not to download. Maybe if I leave it until tomorrow some-one will come along with something bad to say about it and I can feel righteous in my crankiness and stick by my waiting for SP1 to go gold.

Here’s hoping for tomorrow …. :)
