Windows 8 “Might” Share Your Stuff With Microsoft

I love this .. people getting upset about possible security (?) problems when it comes to Windows 8

Using the recent RTM build of Windows 8, Kobeissi found something odd with Windows SmartScreen, an application that, turned on by default, screens everything one installs from the Internet in order to tell the user if it’s safe or not. When you tell Windows 8 to download something, it gathers information about the application, then sends the data off to Microsoft. Microsoft (obviously automated) checks out the credentials, then lets you know whether or not the application is signed with an official certificate. Pretty standard stuff. However, Kobeissi finds that Windows 8 is “configured to immediately tell Microsoft about every app you download and install.”

This in a world where people share their dumps and other mindless minutia on places like Facebook and Twitter.

Braindead TechCast EP 131: Yes we’re still alive

After missing two night Sean and I are back to disprove the rumors of our demise even though one of us is sick as a dog.

This is kind of a mish-mash show given that it should be our night of cool stuff we tossed a few items of news just to balance things out after missing a couple of days.

Braindead TechCast EP 108: Wow we have a listener and we answer his question

It was kind of a mish-mash night for Sean and I but it turns out that we actually have listener and he took the time to reach out to Sean on Twitter with a question.

Yup, that’s right, a real life question from a real life listener.

Needless to say we did our very best to answer the question.

Braindead TechCast EP 93: Don’t mention Klout around Sean

What to know a little secret.. just between you and me … mention Klout to Sean and watch as a grown man crumbles into a shadow of himself. Seriously. I’m not kidding. I should know because I had him threatening to grab the next flight to Canada and come smack me.

On more important news and being the comic fans we Sean and I couldn’t pass up talking for a few minutes about Wonder Woman – the Cougar edition.

From there we had a few words to say about the Kin … and Verizon.

Braindead TechCast EP 81: Moronic Monday & why no kudos for Microsoft

Normally Monday’s show is dedicated solely to all the moronic things that Sean and I have stumbled across in the previous week but this week we’re doing a bit of a switch-up. The first few stories will of course be of the moronic level but the remainder of the show is all about Microsoft’s announcement at E3 today about the new Xbox 360 with Kinect.

While Sean and I are honestly quite excited about what the new Xbox means as far as our living room entertainment hub bot of us were perplexed why there doesn’t seem to be any – holy crap Microsoft, you actually have done something pretty damn cool.

In fact other than the typical live blog type posts of the events as they happened the response has been the typical lukewarm *yawn* type of thing. Oh well I can say at least that both Sean and I pretty well have our Christmas shopping figured out this year.

Braindead TechCast EP 70: Hershey Kisses for Zuckerberg

Two really big pieces of news today are our main topics of conversation with the first obviously being the announcement from Facebook that once again modified its stance of privacy and our control over it on the service.

Needless to say that both Sean and I are still on the fence over whether there will be any real changes past the cosmetic ones, and how long it will really be before we are back in this same spot.

The second bit of news was the fact that Apple has finally supplanted Microsoft as the tech firm with the highest market cap.

Braindead TechCast EP57: Verizon kills its Kin

Yes folks the world did come to and end last night which is why there was no show yesterday. Well actually real life decided that it would be a good time to mess with both Sean and I and didn’t decide to play nice until it was pretty well too late to do a show. Never fear though we are back tonight in full form.

We start off discussing the news that the pricing for the new Microsoft KIN’s was released today and then promptly slaughtered by Verizon as it announced how much it was going to cost to actually use the KIN on a regular basis. Talk about short-sighted.

Sean pouted at this point because he found out that he wasn’t seeing the incredibly wonderfully redesigned Google search results page but I was. It’s okay he’ll get over it.

Finally we poked some fun at Facebook for a security hole that under certain circumstances let people see other peoples live chats. DUH!

Braindead TechCast EP54: Waving from the middle of an empty field

Now one’s to shy away from using the good old phrase “the pot calling the kettle black” Sean and I have a few words to say about the magnus opus posted today by Steve Jobs that basically said that Adobe Flash was a closed and proprietary program and would never be allowed on the iPhone or iPad. Ummm … this coming from the man in charge of a company know for its proprietary attitude and iron fist control of what goes on either of those two products. Ya …. okay.

The remainder of the show was a discussion around a combination of Microsoft announcement with the first being the admitting that the Courier existed but that they were killing the project. Thanks Ballmer – you ass. Next up was the news that Microsoft is going to be coming to the Social Media game and not as an 800lb gorilla but as a partner playing nice with everyone.

Sean is still reluctant to believe that such a thing could happen but I’m holding our hope.
