The most important difference between Google Buzz and Facebook

Facebook is the biggest monster in the room, there’s no denying that.

It is huge and regardless of how much of an uproar there might be over the way it decides it wants things done it isn’t going anywhere. We might whine and bitch about Facebook constantly changing the rules of the game in order to suit its own ends but unfortunately there is no other social network capable of challenging it.

But perhaps it doesn’t need to be challenged. Perhaps there are alternatives out there that while not as big or all encompassing as Facebook that are just as good in their own way. After all it isn’t a requirement that we need to join, or participate, Facebook – at least not yet.

I was thinking about that today when I read a post by Louis Gray where he was talking about why Google Buzz was a better alternative for him over Facebook.

The world of social networking is not a zero-sum game. For Buzz to succeed does not mean that either of the other networks have to fail. In fact, it doesn’t even mean that Buzz has to be the biggest network on the planet. But it does mean that it should have the potential to be the best. I need a powerful aggregation tool that watches my activity on Google Reader and native blogs, but also offers the option to share photos and videos in a public way. Buzz does that. I need a powerful tool that lets me find friends’ updates from around the Web and engage with them in a central location. Buzz does that.

Some thoughts on curation

relevant-to-my-interests Curation is the new hot buzzword in the tech blogosphere. Some just slough it off as yet another form of aggregation. Others, depending on how the curation is done, throw around words like scrappers and content thieves.

Then you have people like Robert Scoble who – as is his wont – take it to an extreme. However in a post the other day he made some valid points that Louis Gray discussed in a post earlier today.

Robert Scoble, a peer, and fellow geek and curator, said that he will be skipping out on Wednesday’s news, and watching the news ink feeding frenzy as it seeps through our computer screens. His goal won’t be necessarily to report on the news, which will be common knowledge as soon as he starts typing, but to find the best interpretations of the news from his favorite sources. He publicly will be doing something we all must learn to do – separating the news discovery artists from the news spin artists. With tools like Twitter and other networks making it ever easier to hit the publish button, our ability to screen, filter and decide what information is good for us is going to be increasingly tested.

This is something that I have been thinking about off and on for the past little while. It is an idea that I think has a lot of merit and could open up a whole new area for bloggers to expand into.

I’m not talking about the Dredge Report style of curation. Nor am I talking about the hybrid style of Techmeme with their algorithm and biased human editors.

What I do think we could see is more human curation of news, information and ideas done in ways that can provide real value. Especially as people are finding they have less and less time to devote to their own gathering and reading of news and information.

Personal news desks.

I get the sense that a new set of interesting doors could be opening up.

Do you think that we might be on the brink of a new way of finding and processing our daily news fixes?

Apple updating, Sidewiki, and dealing with the flack

flack-jacket Over the past few days I’ve had a couple of posts that seem to prompt some folks to refer to me as everything from a dinosaur to an Apple defender. Rather than try to answer them separately I figured I would roll up my responses into one post.

The first one is regarding my post here yesterday giving Ed Bott a bit of a hard time over his kvetching about Apple’s Software Update Service. Ed’s point was that while he was accessing Windows 7 through Bootcamp on his Mac Mini he didn’t agree with Apple suddenly popping up the Software Update dialog with software included that he neither had installed on Windows 7 or that he even wanted in the first place.

bad-apple It was his opinion that this was just another sneaky example of Apple trying to spread their software onto unsuspecting user’s machines. What got me into trouble with Ed via Twitter was my suggestion that there is nothing wrong with software companies (specifically operating systems companies like Microsoft and Apple) letting me know they had new versions of their products available.

Social Media Discussion Points with Louis Gray – Friendfeed and Facebook

In light of today’s news about Facebook buying up Friendfeed Louis Gray and myself decided this would be an opportune time to launch a new podcast relating to Social Media. These podcasts aren’t long drown out affair but rather quick little 20 minute snapshots of discussions about some hot topic to do with Social Media that catches out eye.

In this case it was the news that Facebook had decided it was time to remove a thorn from its side and buy Friendfeed. This podcast is out short discussion examining some of the why’s and wherefores of the deal.

Hope you will enjoy it – Louis and I did.
