Lazy OEMs equal crap systems – thanks for nothing

For those of you paying attention to the happenings at CES this year you will have noticed all the really, and I mean sweet hardware coming out for Windows users. From laptops err ultrabooks to tablets everything is sporting sweet lines of designs.

Alex Wilhelm over at The Next Web had a good observation about this.

Here’s the real kicker: they are coming from the same people who have sold us utter crud for so long. Dang. They just, I don’t know, tried harder all of a sudden. It’s as if the engeineering teams at the various PC OEMs woke up one morning, and actually drank coffee for a change. “You know Ted, instead of shipping another round of crap, why don’t we make something that people will actually want to use?” I’m annoyed by this. I’m frustrated that we’ve been underserved and charged full price for so long. At least the drought is mostly over. As Microsoft crows here, the current crop of these ‘Ultrabooks’ are sexy and capable and, for the most part, competitively priced.

As I said on Google+ – nicely said Alex, nicely said.

A geeky Mother’s Day present for my wife

To understand why this is kind of a momentous moment in our household one has to understand that for the last 20 some years of my involvement with computers my wife, Kim, hasn’t wanted to touch even a keyboard. We have been together for 14 years this summer and she knew I was a computer geek from day one but it was never something she was interested in.

She has always been a supportive person when it comes to my computer life. From when I was programming and existing on coffee for days on end in order to meet deadlines to now with my career as a blogger. I have been incredibly lucky that way but through it all she has stood firm in her non-interest with computers.

So imagine my surprise a few months ago when she came to me and said she wanted to start using a computer. As I picked up my jaw from the floor she talked about learning more about law and health stuff (she was an HCA in a home for the elderly for years before injuring herself as well as the rest of her health problems).

After thinking on it for awhile I figured the best machine for her would be a laptop. This way she wouldn’t have to be stuck at a desk and would be more inclined to use it if she could do so where she is most comfortable. All that remained was actually buying one for her and getting it all setup.

Tie this in with Mother’s Day and a way to thank her for all her support over the years I picked her up a nice Dell Latitude (D610) and I am just finishing up getting everything installed.

laptop

Yes that is Windows 7 RC and it runs beautifully (no Aero) even on an older laptop.

I also bought her a domain and set her up with a blog (http://www.lifeaccordingtokim.com) as part of the gift. I’m not sure how long it will be before she actually starts posting anything but given that she even has a computer I wouldn’t be surprised by anything she does now.

This is going to be so interesting :)

PJ’s Forum Round-Up 26.10.08

You may have noticed a lack of a post from me last week.  I was wrapped up with IRL events and had to take a breather for a bit.  I’m back, though, and ready to dish!

Probably the most notable event has been the forum relocation to a new server.  Service was getting a bit dodgy and Steven decided to pack things up and move out.  The forum response time is noticeably faster and everything appears to be in place so it looks like Steven dun gud!  *all hail Steven*  Thanks boss!

Oh give me a frikken break

The past day or two the b’sphere has been rippling with news that Microsoft; through their PR company Edelman, has been sending bloggers a shiny new Acer Ferrari with Vista preloaded on it. The response to this has been the typical range of what a cool idea to the usual Anti-Microsoft trying to buy its way into good press.

Of course Robert Scoble; the blogger everyone loves to quote chimes in with an original post that said – “Now that’s my idea of PayPerPost”; which he followed up with a later post of why it was a great idea – as long as the bloggers disclosed the gift:

That is a GREAT idea. After all, how can anyone have a decent conversation about Windows Vista without having put a bunch of time on one of the machines?

Now, regarding blogger ethics. Did you disclose? If you did, you have ethics. If you didn’t, you don’t. It’s that black and white with me.

Did you sell your soul and you disclosed that? Fine. Now it’s up to the readers to decide whether anything you say is worth listening to. But you’re ethical.

Then over at istartedsomething.com you have Long updating the story on an ongoing basis by the looks of it. So far he has posted 8 updates to his original post. Of course this ongoing story is not without a growing list of whiners and doing the usual MS bashing as per the whatsnextblog.com:

The reason is simple. If you’ve ever tried to add a new Microsoft OS to an existing computer, you know you can’t do that without totally fucking up your computer. The only way to switch to a new Microsoft OS is to start with a new computer. And, of course, to wait a year or two while they get the kinks out.

Microsoft wouldn’t chance having dozens of bloggers writing about how VISTA screwed up their computers, so they installed the system on brand new computers. They gave the computers as gifts instead of lending them to the bloggers for review, which is the norm when dealing with traditional journalists.

Now if BL had check she would have found out; and has been verified by many of those that received said gift that they do have the choice to return the laptop after they have written their review (here, here, here).

Personally I think it was a hellva great idea regardless of whether it was an inhouse Microsoft idea or from their PR company. Like Robert and the rest though I do think that it is necessary to keep this above board and that those bloggers who received one must disclose the fact. It’s a matter of ethics regardless of what BL or Dan Warne of APCMag says. I know if I had been one of the lucky ones that would have been stated right from the top and from what I have read so far the majority of those that received have done so.

To equate this move by Microsoft and AMD and Acer as unethical is plain stupid and makes those saying such things look more like a bunch of whiners who didn’t luck out. Besides I didn’t see this kind of furor when Google gave away gifts.

Hey Microsoft if you got anything in the pipeline for reviewing keep me mind okay :) ….

DeadMan’s Handle – about frikken time

This is something that should be shipped as a default program on all laptops – especially for those putzes in government service that can’t seem to keep a handle on sensitive data.

Enter the DeadMan’s Handle. Though this may sound like a spooky Halloween decoration made to frighten children, it just might save your identity from would-be thieves. A dead man’s switch or handle is a failsafe designed for streetcars, trains and subways. In case the train operator becomes incapacitated the switch would cause the train to slow down or stop. Similar switches can be found on some lawnmowers, stopping the blade when let go by the operator. The British company DeadMan’s Handle has designed such a failsafe for laptops.
