Braindead TechCast EP54: Waving from the middle of an empty field

Now one’s to shy away from using the good old phrase “the pot calling the kettle black” Sean and I have a few words to say about the magnus opus posted today by Steve Jobs that basically said that Adobe Flash was a closed and proprietary program and would never be allowed on the iPhone or iPad. Ummm … this coming from the man in charge of a company know for its proprietary attitude and iron fist control of what goes on either of those two products. Ya …. okay.

The remainder of the show was a discussion around a combination of Microsoft announcement with the first being the admitting that the Courier existed but that they were killing the project. Thanks Ballmer – you ass. Next up was the news that Microsoft is going to be coming to the Social Media game and not as an 800lb gorilla but as a partner playing nice with everyone.

Sean is still reluctant to believe that such a thing could happen but I’m holding our hope.

Braindead TechCast EP:54 *YAWN* Excuse me *YAWN* while I *YAWN* nothing personal

Man what a tiring day but don’t take my yawning as a sign of being tired or that I’m bored because I’m really just giving my brain a bit of a boost.

Which I really need as Sean and I take a look at the big news of the day about HP spending $1.2 Billion to buy Palm. We both agree that we really won’t see the full implications of this deal until late fall or early next year but it should prove to be interesting.

Lastly we discuss some rather strange goings on over at Apple in light of them dropping Mac developers from the selection of software being considered for the yearly developer awards. Instead all the emphasis is being placed on the iPhone and iPad which has us left scratching our heads.

Note: This would have been available earlier but Talkshoe proved once more to be a royal pain in the ass.

Braindead TechCast EP52: It’s all about the bacon lube and FBI

In tonight show Sean and I cover a wide range of items that happened in today’s news starting with the fact that apparently you can’t say the word shitty on MSNBC eve3n if you are a Senator in the middle of a hearing. Yes folks shitty is not allowed on television. George Carlin would not be surprised in the least.

The other politically related story we took a quick shot at was the one where Senator Schumer wants Facebook to start explaining itself after which they can expect a visit from the FTC. We both predict this will all blow over in about two weeks unless of course the senators involved figure that it might make for good politicking.

Of course with both of us being windows users we couldn’t pass up on the news that BitDefender has warned Apple that the iPad could be ripe for malware which is sure to get the Apple brigade up in arms and proclaiming no such thing could possibly happen. Ya .. okay.

And finally we talked about the possibility that one of my touchstone subject may actually be answered by Mozilla with a new project called Account Manager that they are working on. We have our fingers crossed.

Braindead TechCast EP51: Moronic Monday and we don’t mean Gizmodo vs. Apple vs. Cops

It’s Moronic Monday folks here at Braindead TechCast headquarters and as is our wont on such Monday’s we seek out the stories of the past week that have struck us as the most moronic. However this week we are making an exception in one case and we won’t be talking about the whole Gizmodo, Apple and Cops dramedy as both Sean and I feel that there is still a lot about the whole thing that is still to come out. So rather waste our listeners time with half baked rumors and suppositions we’re gonna wait a few days.

That said we still found some really good stuff to jab in the ribs and ridicule. For example how about those movie age rating guides being transplanted over to the Web. Then of course we have the whole JooJoo mess and the 64 people who were moronic enough to think this was a good thing to buy.

Let’s not forget about the whole McAfee mess that brought scores of Windows to the state of collapse and said not much more than opps we’re sorry. Finally though has to be the doozy about the study that found that kids could get addicted to the Internet. Thankfully Mathew Ingram at GigaOM call moronic on this first.

Braindead TechCast EP50: Techmeme Friday and at least a couple of really good ROFLMAO moments

This show was actually recorded around 5:30PM because Sean had to go to some silly concert but not one to be put off by small bumps in the road we went early with the show but that doesn’t change the fact that there were some really funny moments – like when Sean couldn’t stop laughing.

Now given it was recorded early I could have posted the audio a little sooner than this but for some reason my body decided that it was the perfect time to come down with a cold. Anyway that kinda slowed posting down a little further – with no thanks to Talkshoe either – but here we are better late than never.

Braindead TechCast EP49: Riding a sugar high

Tonight was one of this free form wing-it nights (even though Sean suggested most nights are like that) where we first professed our undying droolness over the recently leaked information about Dell’s new phones. For me the real sweetness had to be the Windows Phone 7 which pretty well has me ready to line up right now for it – which Sean found funny for some reason.

Of course we had a little bit more to say regarding the assimilation of the Web into Facebook and some thoughts on Google’s seemingly inability to get social – or is it?

Lastly we talked about the crankiness of Louis Gray and his excellent ability to kill you with numbers not to mention how nice it is to see him get some cranky on. This was a follow-up to our conversation yesterday about the recent report from PostRank about their assertion that Buzz is all about bots and Twitter streams. Not to mention the fact that Louis kind of takes ReadWriteWeb to task over their post about the questionable numbers.

Braindead TechCast EP48: Facebook: All your bases belong to us

During Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote speech today at the f8 developers conference I wrote on Twitter concerning a quote from Zuckerberg

“the web is at an important turning point” ya Facebook doesn’t own it all yet and they need to change that

I also said that we are becoming nothing more than a dog and pony show for Facebook as they set about to remake the Web in their own image. In today’s show (recorded early) Sean and I talk about the announcements made at the f8 conferences and just how much we believe that this isn’t a good thing for either the web or bloggers.

Unfortunately; as we note in the show, this is also something that is going to put bloggers in between a rock and a hard place as if we want to succeed and grow we are going to be obligated to incorporate all the poison pills that Facebook is making available. I say obligated because as this thing mutates through the web our readers are increasingly going to be expecting these cool bells and whistles; and when they don’t see them engagement will go down.

Increasingly I am feeling that our Web is being taken away from us and today’s announcements from Facebook only further confirm my feelings.

Braindead TechCast EP47: We are losing our Web

Google is in the news today as everyone preps up for Facebook’s first moves on taking over the world tomorrow from its f8 Developer conference. Unfortunately with Google however it isn’t good news even if the news makes no sense whatsoever.

From being taken to task by 10 privacy commissioners from countries around the world to the idiot idea that the company should be broken up ala the ridiculous example of AT&T – the original AT&T that is – everyone seems to be trying to get in their slaps against the company.

Oh and Sean and I announce to the world .. well the three listeners anyway that what was once the private game of one listener is now open to all. Yes folks we are talking about the Braindead TechCast Drinking Game where every time you hear one of us utter the phrase “out of their evar-loving minds” you get to take a drink. The only caveat is that we can not be held responsible the morning after effects.
