About that blogging fame thing

do-it Write good content and the readers will come.

Engage with your readers and the word will spread.

Connect with the movers and shakers and in time the blogging world will open up to you.

Share the links and be a part of the new economy.

Connect with the social media world; be active on Twitter and Facebook and soon you will find yourself a respected source of information and opinion.

Ya, it might take a year or so of hard work. Getting thoughtful and informative posts up every day. Sharing pearls of wisdom on Twitter. Putting effort into that Facebook page.

We’re lead to believe that by following the templates of people like Chris Brogan, Robert Scoble, Shoemoney and others whose names we see daily being quoted and listened to we could have a shot at being one of them.

Maybe at one time that could be held as a truism, but not now.

I’ve been doing this for going on 5 years and I have followed the templates. I have tried to be the thoughtful and informative blogger. I can be found in the Twitter rolodex of those leaders. Yet, the links get fewer and the quotes … well … a thing of the past.

Does this mean you shouldn’t blog?

Does this mean your thought have any less value?

No. It doesn’t mean that at all.

Just don’t expect fame. Don’t expect seeing your words quoted as they once might have been. Don’t expect links to be returned. Don’t expect your thoughts to be the spark for others.

Times have changed.

Do it because you want to express yourself, your thoughts, your ideas and your dreams.

Do it for the words.

Do it.

Hashtags are a good idea but not in blog posts

too-many-dumb I admit that Technorati has for the most part ceased to be anything that a blogger needs to concern themselves with. They are just another player in the search and advertising world.

The once ubiquitous Technorati tags have long stopped gracing the posts of many a blogger post, myself included. Stowe Boyd came to that conclusion today but his replacement for them is … well … stupid and bound to be irritating.

You see he has decided that he is now going to use hashtags within his posts

hashtags

Ya .. having the pound symbol (#) littered through a post makes for an enjoyable reading experience.

Replacing a useless idea with a dumb one isn’t an improvement.

Sponsorships: great idea for little guy except companies couldn’t care less

sharks

Gotta give Mack Collier some kudos for trying to bring up the idea of sponsorships for the little bloggers out there. It’s a great idea and one that I have talked about many times here until …

I gave up.

It’s one thing to know that your blog really doesn’t mean much in the grander scheme of things but when a company who’s product you evangelize like there is no tomorrow says you’re not big enough to consider – well, salt meet wound.

I had a sponsor info page as Mack suggests. It’s now hidden until my numbers go up because pointing a company to the info would probably only result in guffaws of laughter in some staff lunchroom.

Don’t get me wrong. I still believe that the best road to monetizing one’s content for small blogs is through sponsorships. Unfortunately companies don’t agree. They all want the expensive TechCrunch like bang for the buck. Us small fry are too much work so we get thrown back in to the AdSense shark pen.

I appreciate the sediment Mack but come back and see me when companies actually give a shit.

The Blogosphere: we have the technology, we can rebuild it

Posted on January 1, 2010 by Steven Hodson

rebuild The last few years have been hard on the blogosphere. Many people have proclaimed them as being no better than the crazy uncle we all deny exists.

2009 was especially hard with the autopsy knives primed to start slicing and dicing more than once. Twitter solidified in the digerati as the only go-to <cough> real-time </cough> venue. Facebook is the hotspot that none of us wanted to admit to but we all staked our claim.

Through it all people pointed to the falling shingles and chipping paint of our blogs that were once the real hub of Social Media. After all just how many cookie-cutter single dwellings echoing the big boys can we support. Not too mention that the very economy that helped build those homes was being hijacked or hoarded.
