You just had to know this kind of crap was coming

One of the more interesting arguments I have heard lately comes from Charles Arthur at the Guardian where he suggests that the closed system typified by Apple and its recently released iPad is the way that the web should be going. His reasoning of course is because of all the badness that the openness of the Windows platform has caused us.

In short, closed proprietary systems are good.  Open inexpensive systems are bad. The iPad is the answer to our security concerns. Windows is to blame for everything that is going wrong (never mind the people using it).

WTF?

Look I agree that Windows has been a major weakness with web security but that has to be looked at with the understanding that the Windows platform has the largest user base in the world. Anything with the kind of attention that Windows has is bound to be attacked.

But to suggest that we should all give up the openness that comes with that platform in favor of using computers and other electronic gadgets from Apple just because it is ruled with an iron fist is … well .. brain dead and to suggest it as a viable alternative is just plain stupid.

Braindead TechCast EP40: An Apple is best served up green unless you’re Google

They say that too many apples at once can give you really bad cramps. That may be true because after the last six or seven days of non-stop Apple news my head is really beginning to hurt – BRAIN  CRAMP!

The really bad side effect of that – besides many trips to the washroom – is that there is much else to talk about except for Apple crap … just like tonight.

So in the spirit of sharing the pain Sean and I first off own up to getting one thing wrong about today’s news. We had said last night that we didn’t see Apple announcing an ad network today – well, we were wrong the did announce it along with a whole bunch of other stuff.

One thing they didn’t announce however but was later point out by John Gruber was another big slap towards Adobe (with an updated post included in the list from Gruber).

Canada and the iPad, where once more we have to shut up and wait

As many people might remember when the iPhone was first released in the US the anticipation among many Canadians was that we would be next in line for it to start selling like hotcakes. Sure it was bad enough that it was going to be exclusive to Rogers in the beginning but that was because the other two big players, Bell and Telus, didn’t have a compatible network. Mind you it sure did prompt them to get working on putting one together pretty quick.

However we didn’t get it right away as many might have hoped but rather had to wait until the late spring of 2008 before we could start paying outrageous money for the privilege. Even then though not all was rosy as people found out when they went rushing to the App Store to buy the coolest new apps. A good example is the crippled version of Skype that we got stuck with or the apps that required Web feeds to be useful were geotarded.

It wasn’t a pretty picture but it is one that will be repeated with the iPad apparently as we will have to wait until Late April before it shows up on our side of the 49th Parallel. Then just as with the iPhone we will have the pleasure of not being able to use some of the cooler features of the iPad .. like iBooks, television shows, movies or other applications. Once more the whole ugly geotarding mess will rear its head.

CobWEBs Daily Edition podcast: Sean discovers Apple’s plan for financial dominance

cbn1-podpost There’s a lot of stuff being written about Apple’s iPad and whether it will succeed or not. Some are just assuming a slam dunk because it’s Apple while others are beginning to pile on with their opinions about what is wrong with it.

What a lot of the pundits are missing is the stuff that happened yesterday that has far wider implication than just one little ol’ obese iPhone or iPod. I wrote about one of those quiet revolutions over at The Inquisitr earlier today and in our show tonight Sean passes along something that he figured out while on the treadmill (ya he’s an exciting guy <snicker>™).

In effect Apple now has a four quarter money train and press machine.

CobWEBs Daily Edition podcast: Apple shows the world the iPad – an internet ready Kotex

cbn1-podpost Today’s show is a little earlier because none of my fans came to my rescue and saved me from having to talk about the Save The World gift that Steve Jobs and Apple brought down to the masses from the Mount of Cupertino.

So there you have it – me and Sean talking about the Apple iPad. At least we do try and look at it with some analytical eyes rather than the “Oh My God I Gotta Get One” viewpoint that seems to be prevalent at the moment.

Real mobile innovation has nothing to do with smartphones

vaseline So Google officially announced their Nexus One today.

Does this mean that now everyone is going to be going gaga over the brand new world where everything is mobile and beautiful?

Will the sun be all rosy colored when we get up in the morning?

Not likely.

There is no brave new world of mobile computing for all that will come raining down on us. No smartphone, or superphone is going to bring real mobile innovation to the masses no matter how much we might want to wish it so.

The reason: wireless broadband providers.

CobWEBs Daily Edition podcast: Budget problems? Slap an Apple logo on it!

cbn1-podpost In another of those mark your calendar events Sean got together with our third host Mark ‘Rizzn’ Hopkins for tonight’s show.

Of course given the recent rumors flying around over the fact that Apple is going to be anointing the world with it version of computing nirvana – otherwise known as the Jesus Tablet – Mark and Sean felt it was their duty to talk about it.

Enjoy the show.
