When I bought my first “IBM”-compatible computer, it came with a 500MB hard disk. Applications back then didn’t hog as much space as they do now, but storage still became an issue, hence the advent of the Archival Utility. Taking that 700k MIDI file down to 500k was significant savings, plus the ability to “bundle” several files together was handy.

I'm a big 7-Zip fan. I actually paid for WinZip a couple versions back (in the 90s), but eventually, you had to buy a new version to keep it legal. Enter 7-Zip. Great program.
Can I assume you use other great open source stuff like Filezilla for your FTP needs? Lots of good stuff out there for no cost.

I used Filezilla for a long time but it got to be really flakey for me so when I installed Win7 I put out a call on FriendFeed for a replacement. A couple of folks recommended I try out WinSCP which I did and I liked it a lot .. no more Filezilla now

I like to use open source whenever I can. The lack of a direct price tag, obviously, the fact that my donations are helping more than just some suits' bonus, and open source software is usually just plain BETTER than the stuff you pay money for. It's built by people who build what they themselves would use. No bloat, no crap, no useless features that some advisory panel told them is the Next Big Thing.
