Before the great unwashed masses began the dispora to the Internet it was easy for entities like the government and corporations to keep secrets. That great big red Top Secret stamp carried weight in a world where individuals didn’t have global access to information. Now though, the territory was once ruled by Deep Throats and clandestine meetings is being encroached upon by a whole new brand of information sleuths using the Internet as their gateway to the public.
Governments the world around and corporate boardrooms globally are spilling their secrets without even realizing what they are doing. This is because this new cadre of public spirited bloggers are able to piece all those little clues that lie around the Internet and come up with something that neither governments or corporations wanted out in the public purview.
Such is the case of a post by Lewis Page where he lets us all know about a new secret surveillance and tracking project currently underway; albeit still in the beginning stages, within those dark halls of DARPA. For those that may not be familiar with the acronym it meansĀ Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and is a part of the US military. This being the case you would figure that seeing secret projects being discussed in a public arena wouldn’t be an almost everyday occurrence but in today’s inter-connectivity the shadows are being shifted around on a continual basis shining the light on all kinds of interesting things – if you pay attention.
And that’s the thing. There are a lot of people around the world thanks to the Internet who are watching and sharing. This is something that both governments and corporations aren’t ready for either I think as they have been able to hide their secrets for so long they have forgotten what public scrutiny is. they are now facing a public that isn’t afraid to hold them up to the light and demand answers or make them accountable when things go wrong. In this way the Internet has changed forever how those in power try and hide things from the public.
It would be foolish to assume that all the secrets held by the government and corporations will come out in the bright light of day but you can be assured that the Internet is making it a lot harder to keep them in the dark.

While I agree that secrets are much harder to keep these days, I'm not sure that material published by a government agency on the web counts as a secret.
Or are you saying that, in the past, this unclassified material would have circulated only among a select audience of people in the know?

Yes that is what I am suggesting but then that is just a personal opinion so
I could very well be off base
