Rogers readies its ‘let’s really screw our customers’ iPhone plan

I just ran across this via Mack on FriendFeed but according to Tod Maffin Rogers is going to love distributing the iPhone to Canadians. Of course the company is well known for putting the screws to its customers almost as much as Bell does. However the iPhone is going to give them virgin territory that Bell won’t be able to touch which means hurtful times ahead I would imagine.

Tod was able to get this much information about what Rogers has up its sleeve

  • You will only be able to buy an iPhone if you agree to a three-year plan.
  • Visual Voicemail WILL work in Canada
  • Handset costs in Canada: $199 for 8GB, $299 for 16GB
  • Cost of the data/airtime plan: “Will be announced at a later date.”
  • Will likely be sold by both Fido and Rogers
  • If you already own an iPhone, you will be able to use it on their network.

So unlike our neighbors to the south who get locked into a two year contract with AT&T we have Rogers sucking our lifeblood for three years. However the real kicker at this point is the good old data/airtime plans to be announced at a later date.

Guess it’s time to talk to the bank about that second mortgage and then just signing the check over to Rogers.

Agreed. I was in a Rogers store today since my HTC TyTN went wonky (white screen of death), and the rep there was shocked that I still had a $10/10GB/month plan on my account. Apparently those shouldn't exist anymore — their new rates are way HIGHER. Good to see that data prices are on the rise in Canada!
