It was a tired joke then – It’s a tired joke now

crank_button You know it never fails.

It is almost as certain as death and taxes.

Whenever a Windows user of any capability goes into a public forum of any kind on the web looking for some help with something some jackass in the crowd brings out the old tired joke of “… install Linux and you’ll never have that problem again.” That might have been funny some 10 to 15 years ago for about the first 2 times it was said but all it does now is show how much of a stupid self-important l33t n00b the person thinks they are.

The whole point of the person asking the question in the first place was to get some help not to be treated to a one person comedy show that would get them thrown off any Yuk Yuk’s stage.

So do all the people who are looking for some help a favor – if you can’t do any better than spouting off some tired old line that isn’t even close to being cutesy anymore then STFU.

    James says:

Amen brother. Sure, you can install Linux and get rid of that one problem, but then you have to deal with a whole host of other problems. Just using that line would be like telling someone to trade their BMW in for a Pinto.

    ;)

Or you could just load Linux and you wouldn't have the problem in the first place.

@Pa_2: You'd still have the “host of other problems” mentioned by James (like not being able to run some Windows programs that you might need).

Steven, was this inspired by the comment on this item in my FriendFeed today? Just wondering…

The fact that this just happened in my feed, plus knowing you're subscribed to me, got me wondering… :) I just try to let that kind of thing slide. I do it occasionally myself, though usually in reference to some Microsoft product that's not an OS (IE, Word, etc.)

No! You 'assume' that there are Windows programs that I might need. Having spent enough time with Linux (I am still a M$ Administrator so I know the difference) I can say that M$ is a slimy PC based virus that its users don't even recognize… Winders is a 'program' unto itself that must be run in a controlled sandbox so it doesn't pollute legitimate computing environments. I contain Winders in VMWare … at least there it doesn't corrupt the rest of my computer. I find the assertion that I 'might need' some Winders programs … contemptible. You, having consumed the Redmond Kool-Aid… might need a Winders program… sorry for your ill fortune.

Apparently you've been drinking a tad bit too much of the Linux Kool-aid there. Relax with the zealousy my man… it's only an OS.
