As those of you that drop by the site; rather than just read the RSS feed, will notice the blog has undergone a bit of a face lift as well as successfully been upgraded to the newest WordPress release.
The upgrade it self was pleasantly painless especially since I used the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin from Techie Buss. If you haven’t tried this handy dandy little plugin then you are missing out on an incredibly easy way to backup and upgrade your WordPress blog in 5 easy steps. I have tried the plugin on 3 different blogs now and I have yet for it cause any problems. It has become a permanent part of my blogging toolkit. Great work Techie Buzz.
Now one of the reason I did a theme change was because I was having problems with a few plugins/widgets that I thought were the reason for the page crashing on load. So I decided the easiest thing to do would be to find another theme that suited my tastes and see if that fixed the problem.
Well it didn’t.
The same plugins plus a new one are still causing the same page crashes and for the life of me I can figure it out. The plugins that appear to cause the crash under certain circumstances are podPress, WidgetBucks and now I can add the new ScratchBack widget to the list. The strange thing is though that I have pretty well determined that is depends on where I place the widgets; with the exception of podPress, in the sidebar. If I place them before the AdSense banners the page will crash; but if I place them after then everything seems to be okay. This one has me scratching my head as it doesn’t matter what browser I try the results are the same.
I don’t think that this a problem with the mentioned widgets or plugins but something isn’t wanting to play nice somewhere and it is driving me a little crazy trying to figure out what it is.
The one other odd thing with the new install of WordPress is that editing of the widget setting in the Admin area has turn down right quirky. Normally when you try to edit the text content of the text widget you could use Ctrl + A to select all the text or Shift + Down Arrow (or any arrow key action) to select the text. Now it doesn’t work – you have to use the Delete or Backspace key to remove the text you want gone.
Another really odd thing that happen recently with another of my blogs is that I can’t even post or edit posts. When I tried Windows Live Writer to post something I get the error that it can’t find the xmlrpc.php file and when I try from the Admin page I also get an error about trying to save the post. This even happens when I try to save an edited post. I have checked permissions and everything appears fine. The thing is that the blog is on the same server as this one and another one that works just fine. In effect the blog is dead in the water and that is irritating.
Even with the problems; which hopefully someone might have an idea of how to fix them, I am pleased with the upgrade and the new theme now that pretty well all the tweaking has been done. Now I can get back to writing about the important stuff
